Earlier this year, I drafted a leadership philosophy that I felt pretty accurately represented the qualities that I wanted to embody as a leader. As the year progressed, I found myself embracing some aspects of this philosophy more than others, and came across a key piece that I’d left out – inspiring excellence. Below is my (slightly) revised leadership philosophy.
A leader values effective communication. That means not just talking, but also listening. A leader can use their communication skills to facilitate discussions, negotiate conflicts, and advocate for themselves or their team members. A leader is able to hold back judgment while listening to others, and be open to new ideas, but also willing to stand up and fight for what they believe in.
A leader inspires excellence and dedication by example. A leader understands the importance of the whole team working together towards a common goal, and of cultivating an environment of openness where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
A leader values integrity and accountability. A leader is honest, and has strong moral and ethical principles, and expects their team to as well. A leader holds themself responsible for their behavior and their decisions, can admit their mistakes and learn from them, will apologize when necessary, and accepts the consequences of their actions.
