PAS #1 – Everything about “Saturday Night Live”

“Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

When I hear those words, my face lights up as I prepare to be thoroughly entertained for the next hour and a half. I had always known about Saturday Night Live, but I didn’t start watching it religiously until a few years ago. I don’t know how I made it through the years before it because SNL is pretty much my life. Almost any situation I encounter can be related to SNL. Instead of “There’s an app for that,” I say, “There’s an SNL skit for that.” A friend will be telling me a story and BAM, it hits me. I’ll grab my laptop and find the appropriate video clip for the situation. We then proceed to watch it and die1.

I have a passion for comedy and making people laugh or just lifting their spirits. I take skits and episodes as ammo for conversation and ways to make situations less awkward. To me, comedy and entertainment stem from SNL. You always know who’s on the top of the charts because they get the funniest and most famous actors as the hilarious hosts and the hottest musical groups to perform.  It’s also how I stay in the loop on what political and global shenanigans are occurring.

Many great actors and writers got their start on SNL. From Stephen Colbert, to Will Ferrell, to Eddie Murphy and Tina Fey. These actors inspire me to try to be funny and entertain my friends. I find myself, both consciously and subconsciously, trying to imitate the skits to make people laugh. After reading Tina Fey’s book Bossypants, I found a new appreciation for what the writers and actors do on SNL and just how much work they put in to putting on a great show. I don’t think I could ever do their job, but I sure enjoy watching them.

Over the next few months I hope to explore different aspects of the show Saturday Night Live and the lives and other career paths of the amazing cast. Hopefully you will gain a little more knowledge and appreciation about these amazing comedians. If nothing else, at least you’ll find a few funny videos to watch when you’re procrastinating on your research paper.

Laugh on.

1Dying is my term for laughing. But it’s more than laughing, or even LOLing. It’s usually like ROTFLOL or, my favorite, LSHMSFOAIDMT (laughing so hard my sombrero falls off and I drop my taco2).
