PAS #6 – Parody Chrysler Commercial

In the celebratory spirit of my Rhetorical Analysis essay, I decided to give Clint Eastwood and the famous commercial one last hurrah. Six days after the Super Bowl commercial aired, SNL filmed a parody Chrysler commercial. They took it to a whole new level and created three installments.

These “commercials” feature Clint Eastwood again, as played by the hilariously creepy Bill Hader, commenting on his original Chrysler commercial and continuing the analogy into the 3rd and 4th quarters. He elaborates and does get a little political despite ridiculing some Americans for believing it was a political move. He makes it funny by then saying that while we’re only in the 4th quarter, China is in overtime and “owns half the stadium.” The parody certainly pokes fun at Chrysler. Each parody ad is for a different company, first Chrysler, then Little Caesar’s Pizza, and then Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. This emphasizes how the original was it was not a very obvious Chrysler ad.

My favorite part of it though is when Eastwood says, “And there’s no timeouts left. How do I know? Because my pants get higher every quarter.” As the installments progress, his pants start out at his waist but get higher and higher. By the 3rd ad, Eastwood’s pants are all the way up to his chest. You really must watch to appreciate this statement, but it’s the classic old man pants hiked up really high. It’s the little things that get me.

The 3rd part of the ad is Eastwood saying that the game is over and we lost to Mexico. SNL definitely made it more political and worldly, but still captured everything that is going on. It was funny because it was so well done. Hader looked just like Eastwood and the images shown looked exactly like the ones from the original commercial. I gotta hand it to Saturday Night Live. They are some funny and intelligent people. And that’s an understatement.

SNL is up there on my list of favorite tv shows. I enjoy that their skits are tastefully done (for the most part) and that they range from parodies of movies to parodies of politics; they cover comical subjects and subjects that need to given attention. I’ve never seen this skit though, thanks for sharing some laughs!
