WIP#1 – Civic Issues Topic: Energy

Ever since I saw the movie “The Inconvenient Truth” I became a full believer in global warming and became more interested in becoming “environmentally friendly.” The movie had a brainwash effect on me, as I was pretty young and easily swayed. I now realize that there is no perfect solution for anything and that the idea of global warming is debated because politicians and researches make it seem like a bigger deal than it may be because they just want money.

Regardless, I still believe that is important for us to treat the world more kindly and look for alternatives. Obviously energy is extremely important and our society could not function without it. I believe that sustainability is really important; we should not be as dependent on certain sources, such as fossil fuels and especially foreign oil. Engineering new ways to harvest renewable and sustainable energy would be the best way to go in my opinion. With this blog I am going to focus on energy. There are many different alternative energies available, but not all are perfected. I know that many of them are just not efficient or affordable enough for commercial use. I hope to explore these different types of energy and look at their pros and cons.

There are also a lot of controversies surrounding different types of energy sources–for example the debate on fracking and ideas that creating new forms of energy could cause just as much pollution in the process of engineering it. With any issue, there are going to pluses and minuses. It takes a lot of research and debating to carefully look at both sides to determine which side will have a more positive and beneficial impact.

Having taken an Energy and the environment class last semester I have gained a solid interest in much of the issues you have addressed. I also learned that there is a whole world underneath the word sustainability. I think bring many pros and cons to light will be helpful as many people just hear someone raving about the next great thing and get stuck on it.
