Why game companies should bring back old classics

I’m a firm believer in bringing back the old classics. The combined nostalgia and joy of playing your beloved games that you loved as a child is one of the best things ever. I see many benefits for the developing company to bringing back it’s games that date back as long as 20 years.

I’m really excited for the Crash Bandicoot that is coming out this year. It’s one of my favorite games growing up playing on the PlayStation 1. Naughty Dog, which is the company that worked on the Crash Bandicoot franchise, is a huge household name. It has accrued a huge fan base because of games like Crash Bandicoot and more recent ones like Uncharted and the Last Of Us. Their huge fan base is all the more reason they should be rebooting the Crash Bandicoot series as they should have years ago! Sure, kids today won’t understand what it was like for us to play this game on the PS1, but it’s definitely a game that Naughty Dog fans have been waiting for to be rebooted/remastered. Another reason that would be great for them to release old classics is to entice people to purchase the PS4s, therefore increasing the user base for the platform. I see this as an opportunity for Naughty Dog themselves to increase more of their sales for their other games at the same time.

I definitely agree with this, there are so many games that I was able to become attached to even with the awful graphics of the late 90s and early 2000s, and I feel like they would reach their full potential with a modern re-texture that keeps the gameplay the same. Games like the original spyro games and golden eye would definitely catch my attention if they were brought back to life with modern day graphics.

I’m so excited for the Starcraft Remastered version. I think the best part is that Blizzard is offering it for free! Blizzard itself is such a huge company, and I think because countries like South Korea STILL run tournaments using starcraft convinced Blizzard to do so. I know my childhood was all about the UMS maps in Starcraft, and the remastered version will bring some hype and community to this sort of dying game. This is all the community could ask for, as the remastered version will ONLY touch up the graphics, and not the mechanics (however old they may be). I’d love companies to publish newer remastered versions just for nostalgia sake (I’m sure there is a market for that and it’s just touching up the old game so it isn’t as much work).

Remasters are a really good way for a company to make a lot of money off of nostalgic gamers cheaply, and I get the feeling companies are catching on. But, I feel like this trend could lead to stagnation if this goes too far and the market is flooded with remasters. I’m all for remasters, but if it costs shelf space of an original IP, then all I can say is be careful what you wish for.

I’m usually also a fan of rebooting or porting a game or series that I played when I was younger. A lot of it has to do with nostalgia but one game for example that was like this for me was Pokemon Omega Ruby for the 3DS a couple years ago because I played the original ruby version on GBA endlessly as a child. Also to Anisha, you mention you loved playing Sonic. Have you seen this? http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/sonic-mania-switch

Remastered games always provide a great sense of nostalgia, if done correctly. There have been too many incidents nowadays where remastered games fail to uphold the best qualities of the original game. The improved graphics may be nice, sure, but they mean nothing if the core aspects of the original game are not kept intact.

Old IP is always a good way to sell games. Famous animes, cartoons, or even old games are very popular, and the history had already proved that those contents are very successful. There are two big problems developers must think about when they use an old IP to make a new game: 1. They must keep some classic tags to appeal and satisfy the old player. 2. They have to make some innovations to attract people who had heard the IP but never know what’s it all about. Balance these two factors is very influential and difficult. Pokemon Go had great success last year, but after a few months, not many people play it anymore.

Bringing back classics can be great. I think it’ll also help bring forth new features in the old games. I remember there being features I wished to see that were never there, possibly because of technological limitation. It’ll be interesting to see what’ll be new.

I completely agree with you about bringing back older games. I loved playing games like Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, The Lion King, and Prince. It would be really great to be able to play these games again. Though kids now may not appeal to these games, the generation that was introduced to these games would thoroughly enjoy it and be willing to purchase a PS4 just to be able to play it.
