Let’s Talk About A TED Talk

The Andrew Stanton TED Talk was really cool. i didn’t realize how many Pixar movies that he had written, especially considering that they were some of my favorites. I especially didn’t think of the person who writes Pixar movies to be the type of guy to say that joke from the beginning. It’s sort of like when you see Bob Saget, the loving father from Full House, stand up in Half Baked and yell, “I used to suck d*ck for coke!” Another example in the same vein is that the guy who voiced Remi the rat in Ratatouille is Patton Oswalt, one of my favorite comedians. He is also an avid user of the f-bomb and other not-so-pixar stories.

I really liked his way of presenting facts that, even if you somehow realize that they are inherently true, you don’t realize the extent to which they govern stories. He explained them well, and then told some personal story in order to elaborate on them better. It was a nice way to break up what could have been a lecture into a really good talk that I liked to listen to. It wouldn’t be hard to put this into my own TED Talk, especially considering that my talk will probably be something involving music. I have a plethora of stories involving music in some way, so drawing upon those wouldn’t be hard. Now, I just need a topic for the talk.

I also really liked his use of themes and how underlying every story is some sort of theme that could be seen with some sort of metaphorical magnifying glass. That one would be much harder to incorporate into a TED Talk about music. How would the theme even go? “People like music”? Maybe something about self-expression and how music is a conduit for that. Any suggestions, readers who are forced to comment on these posts?

  1. Hi, Jacob! The fact that you already have many stories lined up for your speech means that you won’t be absent of content. Being able to entertain your audience and keep them wrapped in while simultaneously getting your point across is absolutely crucial in Ted Talks, so you’ll do great!
