Career Goals:

cropped-alaska.jpgI’ll start by saying I am blessed to be able to say that I totally enjoy my work. I have been a co- and extra-curricular program/student activities coordinator since 1997. I love what I do, I enjoy the students with whom I work, and would like to remain in the field of Student Affairs.

During a practicum for my BA in Student Affairs in Higher Education, I obtained a copy of Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession 4th edition-Komives and Woodard  and the CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education. Through these two readings I discovered a number of areas in which I had interest.  The three areas in which I am most interested: Career Services, Risk Management (RM), and Leadership and Emotional Intelligence.

Of these three I would say the field of Emotional Intelligence is what interests me the most. Emotional-IntelligenceThrough years of personal counseling, I have developed my own EI.  I believe if humans learned how to understand their feelings, learned to appropriately express them, and learned how to understand others emotions, this world would be a better place. How many of us have truly explored more than a few of the 250+ emotions we may experience on any given day?

  1. Jackie W-Piatt says:

As part of my first course (HI ED 490) in the Masters of Education, Higher Education-Student Engagement program through the World Campus of Penn State University, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Matt Sowcik, Assistant Professor in Leadership Studies and the Director of Leadership Education at Wilkes University’s Sidhu School of Business and Leadership, located in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Shortly after my first online interview with Dr. Sowcik, I was sharing my MEd information on the World Campus website with a co-worker when I discovered a new degree program being offered: MPS in Psychology of Leadership at Work. I reviewed the course offerings and immediately knew this was the program of study which I had been looking for.

The course offerings cover a variety of topics under the umbrella of the psychology of leadership:

    Global and Cross-cultural Leadership
Psychology of Servant and Authentic Leadership
    Leadership for Creativity and Innovation
    Conflict Resolution and Negotiation
    Dysfunctional Leadership
    etc.

During my second interview with Dr. Sowcik, I shared the information on this new program being offered through the World Campus. He too was intrigued by this new major. It was during this second in-person interview that I felt his passion towards his students and the field of Leadership Education and Emotional Intelligence. His passion was contagious! It was then that I believe my decision was made to change my field of study.

I believe my desire to explore Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Development will be better served through this program. I have submitted a formal request for change of major and am hoping to be accepted into this program during this first semester offerings (SU15).
