We all know Donald Trump; it’s kind of hard not to. Trump has made his name prominent in households through his real estate, TV shows, books, and political views. As a political candidate for the 2016 Presidential Election Trump has to watch his words. He is a very emotional person when it comes to things he is passionate about. This was put on display during the Republican Debate. Trump was getting heated throughout this debate. Megyn Kelly, a debate moderator for the Fox News Channel, was asking some of the questions for this debate. In the midst of these questions Trump thought of Kelly as being “sharp” with her questions towards him. He mad a comment directed towards women and their moods. He has yet to apologize. The pathos displayed in what Trump said about Kelly is that every women would feel offended by this. The comment separated men from women. If Trump is trying to become the President of the United States, then he must be more careful as to what he puts out there. He must be fair to women and show that they are equal to men. That is what people are looking for in a Presidential candidate. Trump should be more respectful of a Fox News Channel anchor who talks about the Presidents. He should make sure he gets on her good side.
Puerto Rican Health Coverage Suffering
As Puerto Rico’s economy continues to struggle, there is now news that their Medicare program is going into turmoil. These huge cuts out of their funding will have a disastrous effect on the island; 60% of the people in Puerto Rico are on this Medicare or Medicaid plan. The doctors that are helping on the island are fleeing to the main land to work a ‘less stressful’ job in the medical field. Some contracts are even being terminated due to the decrease in the budget. Some medications and treatments will no longer be available for the rapidly aging population and this will cause the average life expectancy in Puerto Rico to decline. The Medicare program receives federal and commonwealth funds, but these are estimated to run out by the end of next year. Puerto Rico has the highest rate of diabetes and asthma in the US so the 900,000 people who would be cut from this program will no longer be able to afford their medications which will likely have fatal results. This appeals to pathos because there has been protests and rallies in Washington for this poverty-stricken island. People can’t just ignore the the ill and dying, citizens are guilty that the island does not have the same funding as the states do. They feel the need to do something for Puerto Rico. This island is helpless and they need the government to supply them with what is necessary for their health and future generations.
We Did Not Wait for Our President
A flag at half mast is a symbol for mourning, it has been since World War II. The American flag is usually proclamaited for remembering presidents, commemorating a death, Memorial Day, Pearl Harbor, 9/11, and holidays for fallen firefighters and police officers. On July 16, four marines and 1 navy serviceman were killed in a Chattanooga shooting, claimed as a terrorist attack. Everyone around the nation heard about this awful tragedy. President Obama also heard, he had to listen to his colleagues and US citizens for five days telling him to lower the flag at half staff. He responded on July 21 with descending the flag until sunset on July 25. Most people think that the President should’ve acted quicker on the subject and made the order sooner. During other shootings and unfortunate events Obama has made the call around a day later or even that same day. This was unusual for the President to keep the flag as is for this long. That’s why we didn’t wait for the call, people around the country lowered their own flags before the President. Governors and political officials ordered their flag mid way alike police and fire departments. This really shows the pathos in the article by displaying the emotions American citizens have toward circumstances like this. It shows that the people rally behind the few and the brave soldiers who fight for us. They would even act on their own without President’s orders to show their sorrow for the soldiers families. I believe President Obama dropped the ball on this one. The soldiers deserved the half mast flag days before Obama proclaimed it.
One in 11.5 Million
The odds of getting attacked by a shark are one in a 11.5 million as stated by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File. This morning at the J-Bay Open in South Africa, one of the finalist was attacked by two sharks. Mick Fanning, the Australian surfer, was waiting to paddle out for a wave. He said he felt something tug on his surfboards leash and then he saw the fins. At that point he was in a sheer panic. Shark sightings are becoming more and more common. Researchers at dutchsharksociety.org say that this could be because of many reasons. The temperature of the water at shore, feeding grounds, and maybe even because surfers are statistically staying in the water longer. New wet suits provide more insulation so surfers can stay out more often, even year round. Also people have said that the amount of surfers in the water have increased. This shark attack appeals to pathos because in the video of the finals, Fanning’s actions seemed frightened and you could tell he was in a panic. Everyone ashore in the video was gasping and yelling. No one could’ve done anything to help him they just had to wait until the Water Safety Team got the surfer safely to the boat. This article also appeals to logos because many people are wondering why shark attacks are becoming more recent within the last two years. This article gives some insight as to why this species of fish are attacking humans and why they come so close to shore. Everyone should be aware of these recent attacks and be safe in the water.
Pluto’s Out of This World
In recent discoveries, Pluto’s surface has reshaped our model we’ve always known. The splotches on Pluto’s far side have become darker and more blended into the lighter surface. These observations are crucial for this dwarf planet because of the limited amount of time NASA has to look at the far side before Pluto revolves to its other side. Mission principal investigators have received immense amounts of money to examine these far off planets. All this money being put into space missions is controversial because some people think our space station does not need to look at dwarf planets millions of miles away rather than spending that money on our own planet. Other people really believe we have not figured out our world yet so why should we go to another? NASA has lost some credibility with these people by spending their money on a recently deleted planet from our solar system. The ethos appeal is always in effect when our space station is working on mission because people want to solve what is happening at home, not what is happening 4.67 billion miles away. Pathos also comes into play because this gets people angry and frustrated by what their money is going to. The people of the United States have mixed emotions about NASA and all they do and that makes the citizens dislike what our Congress is doing. Congress gives NASA their budget so the people have a right to be vexed by their decisions. This tiny planet has made people questions our government over tiny splotches.
We Believed They Could, So They Did
July 17, 2011, twenty-one teammates dropped their heads in defeat staring at a silver medal around their necks. The US Women’s National Soccer Team had gotten second place after a shoot out against Japan in the World Cup Final. The next tournament wasn’t until 2015, these players had a decent amount of time on their hands to think of the disappointment they felt on that day. That feeling, their teammates, their skill, and their coach led the US to a 5-2 victory over Japan four years later in another FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. This years World Cup was held in Canada which meant that the US basically had a home field advantage every game they played with more than half of the fans chanting, ‘USA USA USA’. Yelling this at the top of our lungs has emotional appeal to the fans because we venerate our country; we vicariously share the success with the team. A win for the team is a win for every US citizen. This chant can be heard all over the United States and has pushed players to fight for their country. We all join in for the same reasons, because we are one nation, one team, that’s why we believe.
