Questions for the Peanut Gallery

Before I really get into the nuts and bolts of what I want to be talking about in this blog, I’d like to get some opinions from you lovely people.

Last week I listed some of the things I thought would be interesting to talk about (why we label, what constitutes good vs bad, what makes a “good” or well lived life, etc), but I wanted to hear what some of you think.

What issues do you find you’re facing right now? What do you find yourself pondering on long car rides, in the shower, while waiting in line, etc.? Is there any particular thought or issue you keep coming back to? Something you think other people might not have thought about?

I know I always end up thinking about the  strangest things, and I know you guys do too sometimes.

Since this blog is more than anything a compilation of ideas that challenge the way we think, I’d like to hear what you guys are actually thinking, if that makes sense.

So shoot: What would you guys talk about that might challenge the way the rest of us think? Is there any perception of yours that was challenged lately/in the past?

I’d love to hear what you all think about.

  1. An issue I face more often than not at PSU is the issue of drinking. Personally, I don’t drink, I never have, and I mean, I don’t really plan on it, at least not anytime soon.

However, it’s not like I don’t go out, just because I don’t drink doesn’t mean I’m not fun or that I don’t do fun things.

I go to parties sometimes, although, that’s where the issues lie, it’s one giant cycle:
I’ll go to a party, people are drinking, people offer me a drink, I politely decline, they ask me why not (because apparently it’s a huge deal to not want alcohol every second of my life), I say I don’t drink, they demand to know why, I say my reasons, which usually just include “I just don’t want to,” or something, and then it goes one of two ways- either they respect me and say, “wow good for you!” or they say that I don’t know what I’m missing and that I should just try it and that I’d “loosen up a little bit.”

I just don’t understand why people care sooooo much. I don’t ask them why they DO drink, why should they care what I don’t? It’s actually really exhausting having to explain myself literally every single time I go to a party, which is not too often.

A lot of the time, the parties are boring because I’m the sober one in a crowd of drunk strangers that I don’t care to talk to because it’ll just lead to why I don’t drink.

I just want to know why people care so much and think it’s a big deal that I don’t drink.
