90’s Babies

In light of the recent release of the limited edition collection of Juicy Couture tracksuits at Ubran Outfitters, and news that Bill Nye (the science guy) will have a series on Netflix I am feeling a little bit nostalgic. I was talking to a friend about Juicy Couture tracksuits, and we found ourselves going on a tangent about all the things that comprised our childhood. From destroying my house while riding around in my Heely’s to spending hours on end obsessing over the Jonas Brothers I can’t help but to reminisce over my childhood.  Here is a list of 20 things that made my childhood memorable:

1. The OG Disney Channel Shows

Unfortunetly, these shows are no longer on Disney Channel, therefore Disney Channel will never be the same without the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, That’s So Raven, Boy Meets World, Lizzie McGuire, and Even Stevens.

2. Rainbow Parachute

If you have never played this game in gym class you have never felt pure happiness. Sorry. Nothing beat the anticipation and anxiousness you felt as you waited for your color to be called, and when it did, the rush of happiness was overwhelming.

3. Gauchos

Gauchos were the ultimate fashion statement and ladies let be real, they were SO comfortable. All in favor for the return of gauchos?

4. Tamagotchis

Nothing marked Elementary School in the 90s like Tamagotchis. 90% of the school population owned a Tamagotchi. This little toy was a virtual pet that you were responsible for feeding and taking care of, and you best have believed that my Tamagotchi was taken care of and fed before I even thought to take care of myself.

5. Lunchables/Kid Cuisine

I was the never the kid who dreaded food shopping, in fact, I loved it! I would run to grab a cart, hop in, and spend the entire time begging my mom to buy me Lunchables or Kid Cuisine because that’s what the “cool” kids brought for lunch.

6. Nintendo DS

NintenDogs…Enough said

7. Heelys

For weeks on end I wore my Heelys everywhere, until one TERRIBLE day I feel and twisted my ankle…Did you think that would stop me? YOU THOUGHT WRONG. Heelys or die.

8. Baby Bottle Pop

The iconic Jonas Brothers “Baby Bottle Pop” theme song featured in the 1998 commercial was VERY effective in that  at least one person in the Middle School hall was seen with a Baby Bottle Pop in their hand…”I love it, Gotta have it, Never see me without my, Baby Bottle Pop!”

9. Club Penguin

If you haven’t heard you might want to sit down for this…the original Club Penguin will be shutting down! Developers say that they are launching an improved version that can be accessed on not only computers but mobile devices as well.

10. Aim

Aim is home to all of our embarrassing email titles and awkward middle school conversations.

11. BlackBerry’s

Out with the old in with the new, BlackBerry’s stole Aims fame, and BBM became the new fad.

12. MASH

There is nothing like predicting your future with a tiny spiral.

13. BlockBuster

This was possibly the greatest place on the earth as a kid. Sunday’s in my family meant trips to BlockBuster for a movie night, and nothing beat running down the isles with my sisters contemplating dozens of movies to rent.

14. Juicy Track Suits!

Juicy Tracks Suits marked my middle school career and now that they are making a come back it might mark my college career.

15. Mr. Sketch

I don’t know about you, but when our teachers pulled out the Mr. Sketch Magic Markers tension built in the classroom and it became a war zone…and you only won the battle if you got the blue raspberry smelling marker.

16. “Butt” Scooters

Whether it was a relay race, steal the bacon, or mission impossible, butt scooters in gym class never failed to put a smile on everyone’s face.

17. Glow in the dark stars

I’m not quite sure why everyone was so obsessed with glow in the dark stars, but let me tell you, my ceiling was COVERED in them.

18. Pokemon Cards

Not even Pokemon Go can compare to the intense card battles on the middle school playground.

19. Hermit Crabs

I am not quite sure why they were so popular, but I kid you not my friends and I would have scheduled play dates for our hermit crabs.

20. Passing Notes

Nothing was more embarrassing when you thought you were slick and your teacher cataches you passing notes and hung them on the board for everyone to see.

  1. Wow. This definitely hit home. It reminded me also of the fortune teller game that you used to put on the tip of your fingers, hold in people’s faces, and say “pick a number.” And how could you forget Hit Clips, the iPod that only had one one song? I listened to Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” over and over and over again until my mom finally got me some Brittany Spears. Gotta love it! Thank you for the nostalgic feelings, it makes me so excited to go home and enjoy break!
