It all started with a Big Bang (BANG!)

tv-the-big-bang-theory34This week, I’m going to switch gears from the older themes of other shows and instead focus on my favorite show in TV right now.

The Big Bang Theory began in 2006 and is one of the most watched sitcoms, helping push CBS to retain its #1 network status. In my opinion, not even rival How I Met Your Mother can compare.

For those who haven’t heard of the show, it centers around the lives of four nerds and their ditsy, yet completely gorgeous neighbor. Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard, accompanied by Penny, struggle through life together living in Southern California. The sexual tension between Penny and Leonard is constantly either awkward or out in the open, Raj has an inability to speak to women (except when intoxicated), Howard is a “womanizer,” who yet still lives with his Jewish mother, and Sheldon, well, Sheldon is struggling to come to terms with social norms while battling his own genius and big mouth.

Other characters have come on gone, but two have become regulars: Bernadette and Amy Farrah Fowler. Bernadette is a little spit fire who works at the Cheesecake Factory with Penny, yet is studying to be a micro biologist PhD. She and Howard immediately have an attraction to each other (why, I don’t know). They begin dating, and in the last season, finally tie the knot!

Now, Amy Farrah Fowler is by far my favorite character. She is a neuro-biologist. She and Sheldon have a “relationship,” in that they have a contractual agreement to be supportive of each other and “girlfriend and boyfriend.”

What is particularly amazing about Big Bang is the fact that the writers use the scientific knowledge of the characters to heart, and fact check everything they use in the show, which adds an element of credibility in their humor. Plus, the actress who plays Amy is actually a PhD neurobiologist. WHAT!

The show is a one of a kind in my mind, taking some of the most witty stuff on the planet and transforming it into some great comedy. It’s light-hearted, without much conflict.

There it is, my favorite sitcom.
