It’s The Small Things In Life

Emotions ran wild this week as the commotion of Hurricane Sandy built over here in State College. People prayed for their families and beach houses, hoping for loved ones and places to be left unharmed and dry on the east coast. The week has been full of bad hair days, cold walks to classes, and barely any classes called off (hollaaa for a.m. classes on Monday). Though things have been pretty dreary this week has really not been too awful. I have witnessed many random acts of kindness that makes something as miserable as a hurricane and multiple exams and assignments bearable.

1. Penn State canceled afternoon classes on Monday. Yes, I repeat: PENN STATE CANCELED CLASSES ON MONDAY. A truly unheard of event. Automatically, the dry, frizzy haired campus dwellers became elated. They ran off in the rain, skipping to McLanahan’s to stock up on food they didn’t necessarily need to survive in their dorm room for one night. Nonetheless, though the hurricane did not affect too much on campus, for a given point of time, the students were happy and many proceeding to engage in Hurricane Parties… classic PSU.

2. Studying for biology at 12 a.m. is a treacherous task and not what I’d call a desirable evening/early morning. However, my classmate and friend Emily Pia made the night all the difference with her kindness and godly supply of good food: pretzel m&m’s, swedish fish, popcorn, sun chips, sour patch kids, marshmallows, hot chocolate and so on… How sweet was it of her to share that with all of us!

3. This next one slightly involves me. My friend Maddy and I were bold enough to wait in the line at Chipotle, in the misty rain, on Halloween. You’d assume that this would be a normal task, but no… On Halloween, Chipotle offers a two dollar burrito for anyone in costume. The line was down the street. It was cold. We were in no costume. We just merely waited for my friends roommates to get their as we held their place in line. As soon as they arrived, we left and got food somewhere less crowded. I could look at it in one perspective and say, wow, I wasted a half hour of my life; however, I’m going to look at it as I was able to better someone’s day by barely doing anything. I just had to stand in line.

So these are a couple of pay it forward events I witnessed this week. How about you all? 🙂
