Assignment #2 Idea

I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to use for Assignment #2, but I was drawn to these advertisements and think I might like to analyze them. These ads are from Australia’s postal system. The font in the red strip at the bottom says “If you really want to touch someone, send them a letter.”

The first thing I noticed about them was the hug. One person is coming out from the letter while the other is more real. A hug is something that warms everybody’s heart. I don’t care if you’re a big macho wrestler, a preteen that’s “too cool”, or the next president, everybody loves hugs.

Another thing everybody loves is getting mail. I love the feeling of walking to the mailbox and seeing a personal letter addressed to me, and I think a lot of people would agree. There’s something extra exciting and personal about receiving mail.

I might be slightly biased, however, as I did a lot of letter writing this summer. One of my close friends is attending the Naval Academy, and he left on June 27th for a 7-week “plebe summer.” The only type of communication allowed over plebe summer is letter-writing, no phones, no facebook, no emails, no twitter, just good old-fashioned letters.  I learned a lot about what goes into a letter and how it makes you feel, and I think it’s something a lot of people overlook now that we have new, faster technology available to us.

What I love about these ads is how they, as I’ve hinted to above, relate to all audiences. Most people have loved ones that they care about and want to “touch.” Why not try sending a letter? These ads give the viewer a heartwarming feeling about the postal system, as well as evoking (at least for me) the desire to do that too- to send a letter and make someone feel the same way.

These ads are creative and visually appealing as well. I’m extremely intrigued and would like to look into them more, but here’s the problem: Can I write 4-5 pages on them? What do you think?

Oh! I’m a sucker for puns, so the little play on words at the bottom is definitely a plus.

The picture terrified me for a moment. Absolutely terrified me. Then I read the sentiments and it was very “awww”. I actually still send birthday cards to people, and I collect every card or written note I’ve ever gotten.

  7. I am not sure if a comment on a blog post can warm the heart, but here is one to thank you for sharing these images with us.

As for the 4-5 pages, I imagine they will take care of themselves if you frame things in terms of the power of words and, specifically writing, to move people. What is it about the hand-written word that moves people? Can digital text have the same effect? What are the limits of the kind of correspondance the Australian post office advocates here? What are the affordances of letter writing?

The figures of the people emerging from the letters injects a dimension of technology into the images themselves. Does the use of technology in producing the images for this ad undermine the point the Australian Postal Service is trying to make? Those figures make me think of something like Second Life. Would Second Life be a better way of “touching” someone than a letter?

You are certainly too young to remember those old AT&T commercials around the slogan “Reach Out and Touch Someone.” Here is a link to a couple:

Wow, those feel really dated, but they try to make a point similar to the one the Australian Postal Service wants to make in the ads above. I wonder if you might make some comparisons between the old AT&T ads and these images you have shared here.

I hope you keep us posted on what your investigations uncover.
