The meaning of this image is obviously very blatant to the viewer. The girl is looking at a magazine with a skinny model on the open page and judging herself based off of the picture (which is probably photoshopped) that she is looking at. Often times when people judge themselves they look for the easiest way out instead of thinking logically and taking appropriate steps to fix their insecurity.
The pathos appeal in this picture is relatable to the majority of people in the world. It is definitely a fad in the global society to judge yourself based off of the media’s portrayal of the “perfect person” with the perfect body, skin tone, face, and hair. This girl speaks for many as she desperately tries to alter her body to look like the thin model in the magazine. Often times our desperateness can lead to rash decisions and the young girl in this image thinks no differently than the majority of society.
The visuals in this image also speak to the viewer due to its dull color scheme. Gray walls, dingy background, and washed out colors all drain out any fun or lightheartedness that could be exuded by the image. The blond women you can see on the floor add to the image of the “perfect woman” that is distributed by fashion magazines and other media outlets.
The context surrounding this image is definitely the recent criticism of the media due to their single-minded portrayal of society. The media does not generally like to show diversity in their work because they worry people may find it unattractive and not support their products. Luckily, society now is beginning to vocalize these criticism and people are beginning to crack down and even boycott companies that do not support the diversity that our society really represents.
