Most of you are familiar with transfer credits, the most frequent way students bring credits into the university. But in addition to transfer credits, the university allows students to demonstrate learning outside of the classroom through other means. Through prior learning assessment (PLA), students may earn credit through testing, portfolios, validation. and advanced coursework during high school (plus a few others). The university has long established policies and procedures on credit acquisition and several on-going initiatives to energize the faculty community around PLAs. What is one of the benefits of PLA? Students who use PLA persist and have better graduation rates than students who do not.
Currently, the Director of PLA Michele Rice is preparing for a late summer launch of the university PLA website. The site will answer many of your questions and will serve as an excellent referral tool for both students and faculty. Meanwhile, I will keep you updated on the release of our college faculty/student guide on the credit by portfolio process.
I look forward to working with our community on how best to serve the needs of our students through PLA.
