I joined a mentoring program at work that aims to enhance connections and skills in the organization. So far it has provided classes that were we take quizzes to assess our skills and then we talk about these with other people. Companies are best suited if the practice having opportunities for their employees to enhance their attributes. Through this then I will able to gain a better sense about myself, and if I had never learned about myself then if I was put in a leadership role without these experiences, it would had been a complete failure. The evolutions I took gave in depth look at myself and upon these findings then I realized I needed to adjust some behaviors. I develop a plan to structure my behaviors as I learned that I can overact to being critically reviewed when I make a mistake. There were several times that I have not been able to accept critical feedback and once I understood this then I restructured this behavior. I did this because no one wanted to talk to me or help me which further added to making me perform worse. I was very glad that something like this was available in my workplace and studies have shown that if these strategies are used in the workplace then it will produce better leader. This helped me create positive energy as the mentor program shaped me to be a better leader. The greatest thing I took away from this is that a leader should have experiences, so that they are better equipped to handle an organizations and employees that will work for them.
The program also gave me an insight into what type of skills have through various means like taking assessments. What I learned is that I have a high positive personality. What this means to me is that I am best able to handle the stresses of working (Northouse, 2016). After looking at this then it made me reflect on how do I best optimize my skills to produce the best leadership outcome. I also learned that not all these skills where inherited, but some them took time to develop and refine. These skills came best through putting myself in challenging projects which enhanced my abilities and these greatly influenced my career. These unique situations that I put myself in best aligns with that through experiences then these can shape a person’s skills. (Northouse, 2016).
As a leader I would encourage my employees to take these assessments, put themselves in a mentoring program and challenge themselves to take on more complex work because this resulted in a favorable outcome of the direction of becoming a great leader. These experiences were able to refine and find new skills to become a better leader. This clearly shows that when companies use tactics in the skills approach then they will produce a high quality leader. A leader is not able to lead without knowing who they are firsts and one way to do this is by gaining experiences and putting themselves in situations where they will learn new things. A leader should keep evolving their skills and this is one thing that I will not stop doing as the more influences I have then I can filter the best qualities I want to see in myself. So, strategies employed in the workplace like mentoring and assessments truly work and help you realize who you are as a person.
