Exhibit highlights Penn Staters in Winter Olympic Games

“Penn Staters Skate to Winter Olympic Glory,” an exhibition, is on display January 20–March 20, 2014, in the Penn State All-Sports Museum, University Park. As the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia near, it is time to look into the Penn State historical record and recognize those athletes who have participated in Winter Olympic Games from years gone by. Kurt Oppelt (figure skater representing Austria), Allison Baver (short track speed skater representing the U.S. – in photo below- from http://www.teamusa.org/ ) and Edgar Seymour (bobsledder representing the U.S.) are among the significant Penn Staters who have skated into Olympic memories.allison baver

The All-Sports Museum in conjunction with Penn State University Archives has joined forces with Penn State alumnus and Olympic collector Hal Wilson (Class of 1951) to bring these Olympic accomplishments to life. The exhibition features photographs, memorabilia, game programs and tickets as well as newspaper articles about individual events.

The Olympic Creed states, “the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” As Olympic athletes gather again to test their abilities and training, this exhibition looks back at pioneers and medalists whose fidelity to Penn State was as strong as their devotion to the Olympic creed.

The museum, which is located at the southwest corner of Beaver Stadium, on Curtin Road, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information or if you anticipate needing accessibility accommodations or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact Ken Hickman, krh132@psu.edu or Paul Dzyak, pjd106@psu.edu or 814-865-2123.
