Workshops on publishing tools

By Hélène Huet, Digital Scholarship Services graduate assistant

This semester, Penn State Libraries’ Publishing and Curation Services is launching a series of workshops dedicated to publishing tools, aimed primarily at faculty and graduate students in the humanities – so please spread the word! Library faculty and staff are also welcome. Registration links follow descriptions below for the workshops to be offered.

The first, held on February 13, was entitled “Introduction to Scalar.” The workshop was designed to help acquaint potential users with Scalar, an easy-to-use online publishing tool. If you couldn’t make it on the 13th, we plan to offer the workshop again next semester! More about Scalar at their site, here.

In addition, we’re offering three more workshops. On March 6 (10-11.30 am in KC W140), we will host “Going Public: Publishing Tools, Web Fundamentals, and Your Online Scholarly Presence,” where you will learn how about managing your online scholarly presence, including content criteria for a professional site, guidance on privacy and the use of social media, and an overview of tools to use and to integrate for “going public.” Note: this is a 90-minute session, to allow for discussion/Q&A, as well as hands-on time for creating, or adding to, your site. Register here.

On March 27 (10-11 am in KC W140), we are offering an “Introduction to Omeka.” Omeka is an open-source web publishing tool for creating online collections and exhibits, useful for both teaching and research purposes. This workshop will be an introduction to Omeka for users who have little or no experience with the tool. Register here.

Finally, on April 10 (10-11 am in KC W140), we are hosting an “Introduction to Open Journal Systems.” In this workshop, you will learn more about OJS, an open-source journal publishing application which supports the publication of online journals. Publishing and Curation Services now offers OJS publishing options for students, faculty, and staff publications. This workshop is particularly useful if you’re interested in learning about how to start a new journal, or get an existing one, into OJS. Register here.
