Join Diversity Committee for “Chi-Raq” screening and discussion

The University Libraries Diversity Committee invites you to a screening of Spike Lee’s latest film, “Chi-Raq,” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, in Foster Auditorium, first floor, Paterno Library. Set in Chicago’s Southside and dealing with gun violence, drugs and gangs, “Chi-Raq” is an adaptation of the bawdy Greek comedy “Lysistrata,” where the women of Athens hold a sex strike in order to convince their men to end the Peloponnesian war. The cast of “Chi-Raq” includes Nick Cannon, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, Teyonah Parris, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack.
Chi-Raq posterThe Multicultural Resource Center (MRC), Residence Life, the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) and the University Libraries are co-sponsors of the event. The screening will be followed by a brief panel discussion with MRC director Moses Davis, African American studies professor Jeanine Staples and CAMS assistant professor Mathias Hanses. The panel will discuss how the media depicts and shapes opinion of underrepresented groups, the sexualization of black women in the media and other issues.
