Charge

The Provost has asked how the Libraries may support the University’s sustainability goals. Penn State has defined sustainability as “the simultaneous pursuit of human health and happiness, environmental quality, and economic well-being for current and future generations.” How can the Libraries’ unique mission contribute to meeting these goals?

Sample Topics:

  • Sustainability in the curriculum
  • Research on sustainability in the environment
  • Stewarding collections and information resources
  • Financial sustainability
  • Library operations

Assignment:

Gather input and provide a 2-3 page response to the following questions:

  1. Define the term “sustainability” for the Libraries.  Based on the Libraries unique mission, what does our commitment to sustainability mean, and how do we live up to that commitment?  How do we support and promote this issue through our programmatic work in Teaching & Learning; Discovery, Access, and Preservation; and Advancing Research?
  2. The Provost has asked us to respond to some specific questions pertaining to diversity in our strategic plan. Please refer to those instructions, and to the extent possible, outline how we might respond to these in our final strategic plan.
