Officers’ Retreat on a Budget

The Penn State Rotaract Club isn’t known for sitting on piles of money.  In fact, 9.9 times out of 10, the money we raise goes directly towards a service organization of our choosing.  This system put us in a tight spot when we decided to try to find a fun and affordable (aka free) venue to train our incoming officers.

Our answer?  Rolling up our sleeves and getting a little bit dirty.  Camp T. Frank Soles in Somerset, PA held a race this weekend to help supplement camp costs for the summer.  In return for volunteering (standing in the pouring down rain) for 3 hours directing the runners which way to go next, we were granted a night of lodging and 2 meals free of charge.  We were also permitted to use the rec hall in the afternoon to run a goal setting and team building workshop.
The only costs for the officers included gas money (we had 3 cars in our caravan) and 2 fast food dinners.

Zane on low ropes

Zane Douglass tries out the low ropes course while assisting with the
Warrior Race at Camp Soles in Somerset, PA on March 24, 2012.
Overall, the trip worked out really well; we were able to perform service and accomplish our officers’ goal!
Becky at the wall
Becky Strong eyes up “The Wall”.  Racers were asked to scale this
wall and climb down the other side!  Very hard core!
We’ll definitely look to use this venue again next year.
