A great way to retain members is to make them feel special. Giving members personal attention and responding directly to their needs makes them feel at home within your org and will possibly have them come back.
Giving members responsibilty helps them connect to the org and to the mission of the org (service or otherwise.) It will give them a place and help them to feel like an insider and not just a bystander.
