What is Community Service?

When you think about community service, what comes do mind? Do you think about manual labor? Do you think about punishment? Do you think about requirements? Or, are you like me and other members of the Council of LionHearts?

To us, community service means coming together to help others.  It’s a chance to give back, and an opportunity to learn, that leaves us with experiences we will carry with us forever.
Personally, service at Penn State is a way for me to give back to the community that has given me so much.  It’s an enjoyable activity that gives me as much, if not more, than the people I’m helping.  Every time I volunteer, I have the opportunity to meet new people, spend time with friends and learn more about those living around me.
Over the years, I have learned that even though I can’t always dedicate a lot of time to a service project, the little time I do have can make a big difference.  Community service does not need to come in the form of manual labor or onerous requirements.  It can be something as simple as handing out cookies to people studying in the HUB.
Community service at Penn State is truly what you make of it.  There are a variety of different volunteering opportunities available.  The question is, will you take advantage of them?
