Goal Setting from Council’s Mission

Council members were asked how they are going to personally make sure that Council of LionHearts meets its mission of advancing service at Penn State and personally adding to one’s education through service leadership and reflection.  Each member wrote a SMART goal to help meet this goal, written below:

Advance Service at Penn State

  1. Actively interface with Career Services and college-specific career/recruiting offices to promote service
  2. Designate one Council member as a liaison for Greek life-they come to us every once in a while, but we should reach out to them actively
  3. Friend other Council members on Faceboo0k/Twitter, so leaders can easily advertise events among all COL groups
  4. Talk in meetings about why we do service
  5.  Talk to UPAC about potentially receiving more funding from the University
  6. Have different representatives from other on campus orgs at each COL meeting (e.g. LGBTA, Greek Life, Cultural orgs, etc.)***
  7. Work together to make a name for Council by promote Council and the volunteer website around campus (i.e. through signs, tabling)
  8. Capitalize on Fresh START to recruit volunteers and show students the value of service
  9. Pass down leadership positions and responsibilities to enthusiastic and driven members
  10. Continue to work together with Council groups. Publicize upcoming service projects weeks in advance through newspapers/flyers
  11. Promote campus involvement by surveying students at the beginning of each semester to see what kinds of projects they’d be interested in***
  12. To have Council orgs contribute to a list of organizations they’ve volunteered with that all Council members can view to bring back to their orgs by the end of Fall 2013***
  13. Keep updating COL FB/twitter/Instagram and other social media, including instagraming pictures of service events

Adding value to one’s education and fostering a lifetime commitment to service through service leadership and reflection

  1. Regularly have service goals/reflections as part of project planning so that it becomes a routine part of the experience
  2. Be open to suggestions and eager to reflect
  3. Dedicate a few minutes of every meeting to reflection in order for our members to realize and understand the purpose behind why they volunteer
  4. plan time for reflection into the time we allow for our service events
  5. Reflect after a big service events***
  6. Contact the people we helped to see if we made an impact and reflect on this again about a month after.
  7. During transitions, interviews, etc., make some of the questions reflective.  Why does the person serve their community?  What is important to them in these experiences? **

***deemed especially important and a particular priority by Council
