While college can be a fun and exciting time, it’s also a time when you do a lot of growing up. Part of the experience of maturing in college is balancing everything that comes your way.
First things first, you always have to put your academics first. Think about it; you’re in college to learn, graduate, and hopefully get a job. So you have to make going to classes, completing assignments, and studying for your exams a priority. I’m not saying that you have to live in the library, but at least try to visit it every once in a while.
The second priority behind academics would be to get involved in clubs and activities. Yes, academics are probably the largest reason that you will attend Penn State, but you need a few different outlets to enjoy yourself and relieve you from the pressures of school work. Whether it’s getting involved in Greek life, joining a club sports team, or participating in a THON committee, you have to take yourself away from the classroom every once in a while. Beyond having activities to keep you busy, these organizations are a great way to make friends. Two of my friends on my floor in my residence hall decided to join a THON committee. This decision worked out great for them because they made so many friends and got to share an incredible experience with said friends.
Although coming to Penn State means that you will be surrounded by forty thousand people, it can get a tad overwhelming at times being around everybody. That’s why you should do your best to take some time every day for yourself. Watch one or two episodes of your favorite show on Netflix, take a nap, read a good book, listen to some music, go the gym; do something that is satisfying for you.
It’s easy to lose your balance at times. Personally, I schedule everything that I have to do during the day on the Reminder app on my phone. For long term events, I tend to put those in the Calendar app on my phone as well. There is so much that we all have to do each day, and that only intensifies in college. It’s a good thing; you’re going to grow up a lot and learn so much about yourself. With that said, you have to keep the most important things in check. You’re probably going to make a few mistakes along the way, and that’s okay. The important thing is to bounce back and remember to ask for help when needed.
