An Innovative Alternative to Deep-Frying

It’s no secret that in America, we love our fried food. You can find it anywhere you go, and you really never have to look very hard to find it; fast food restaurants are around every corner, most restaurants offer something fried on their menu, and people fry up their own food at home. Unfortunately, it’s no secret that fried foods are pretty rough on your waistline, and as a result, many Americans have been cutting out fried food or looking for ways to make them healthier. Frying foods in slightly healthier oils and oven-frying were the only methods I had ever really heard of to make fried foods slightly better for you, until tonight, when I read about air-frying.

That’s right. Instead of completely submerging foods in oil to fry them, you can now fry them in air instead. Hot air frying machines work by circulating extremely hot air around food in a way that mimics the flow of heat currents in a pot of boiling oil. The food ends up crispy on the outside and very moist on the inside – similar to the results you would get from deep-frying something. The only oil you need to add to the food is brushed onto it before air frying.

Now, as with all revolutionary technologies, there are some pros and cons to consider. The good news is, air-frying is a lot less work and is a lot safer than traditional deep-frying. There are no pots of boiling oil to heat up, cool down, and somehow dispose of. Over 80,000 household fires per year are caused by oil, fat, or grease cooking, so getting rid of large pots of boiling oil could save firemen a lot of trips and keep a lot of people out of the emergency room. Air frying also doesn’t produce the heavy, oily, lingering smell in your house that deep-frying does. Many people find that while air-fried foods give a similar level of satisfaction to deep-fried foods, they don’t feel as heavy after eating them. This makes sense, because air-frying only uses a fraction of the oil as traditional frying, and much less of that oil is absorbed by the food, making it a dietician-approved option.

Of course, air-frying isn’t perfect. The fact of the matter is that air-fried foods do taste different than deep-fried foods, because they aren’t saturated with fat in the same way (Many people find that they like air-fried food better, but if you’re looking for an exact duplicate of deep-fried food, you aren’t going to get it). And while air-frying saves you a ton of time in preparation and clean-up, actual cooking time is significantly longer. A food that might take 8 minutes to deep-fry takes around 25 minutes to air-fry.

  1. Woah sounds so cool! I’ve had air popped popcorn before…I think…
    I love to deep fry anything. I work as a lifeguard in the summertime and we have a deep fryer there that I like to experiment with… deep fried swedish fish, deep fried potato chips.. yeah so maybe air frying could be the new way to be healthier and definitely prevent injury from the burning hot oil and house fires! I’ll have to check it out!

  2. The air-fryer sounds extremely interesting and I would like to try it. It sounds like a much healthier alternative to deep frying foods (something that my dad loves), but recently my family has been making a shift to a much more healthy kind of lifestyle and I know my family would love to try out a new way to fry food.

  3. Definitely interested in buying an air-fryer as opposed to a deep-fryer. I work at Redifer City Grill in the dinning commons and ever since I started working there, I have stopped eating fries and chicken tenders because I’ve witness how they are fired. The oil that they are fried in isn’t exactly the cleanest and therefore extremely unhealthy. I think this would be a great alternative to deep-frying!
