Research Thrusts

01

Design Complexity

We seek to understand how AM’s layer-by-layer nature enables previously unthought of geometries and material distributions.  This includes special focus on realizing functionally graded materials and leveraging voxlel-based design for complex geometries.

02

Design Guidelines

We seek to understand how AM processes influence the “rules of thumb” required to ensure a manufactured product mirrors its original design intent.  This includes considerations for multifunctional in-situ embedding and concrete extrusion printing.

03

Design Thinking

We seek to understand how to use and teach AM and DfAM in a way that significantly impacts how engineers come up with new designs.  This includes the proper use of project-based learning in classrooms and implementing novel AM education platforms.
