Students DEMAND Gun Control

Gun control is a very prevalent topic in today’s society. These school shootings have been occurring for quite some time now, however, we still do not have legislation in order to protect massive gun violence. Although, there are people trying to bring up the awareness for the necessity of stricter gun laws.

Columbine tends to be the first school shooting that many think about. When it occurred, no one believed that it could possibly happen again, obviously, that is not the case. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Parkland, Santa Fe are just some school shootings that have taken peoples lives away.

Even though there have been many school shootings, it wasn’t until Parkland where the students truly brought attention to what happened. When the shooting was happening, people were recording videos of the gunshots and the students running, and this made people who haven’t been involved feel more attached to this horrific event. After the event, news stations spoke to many students who were expressing their outrage and sadness on the event that happened. 17 people died that day. These students took their anger and desperation and decided to create a movement with the goal for gun control. Many students who were in that building on that horrific day formed March For Our Lives. By the events that they held, other students from around the world planned events on the topic of gun control.

Students from Parkland started off by stating companies who have ties with the NRA, and they stated on social media how we need to start boycotting these companies. They were mainly boycotting FedEx, Amazon, and Apple. The next event that was proposed was the Walkout on March 14th, however, this event was planned by the Women’s March Youth Empower Group. Students walked out of their school at 10 a.m. and stayed outside for 17 minutes. The reason it was 17 minutes was that was how many people died in Parkland. One of the biggest events planned was, on March 24th, 2018 people marched for stricter gun laws in thousands of cities across the world. Not only did these students plan this event, but they also created a walkout. Like the Walkout on March 14th, there was one on April 20th (the day Columbine happened). Students from Connecticut, near Sandy Hook, planned this event.

The students who created the March For Our Lives movement would also propose ideas for other students through the media. These ideas were creating a club for gun control, having a young student run for a seat on their districts school board, going out to vote.

Due to how much attention these students were getting and how strongly people across the country felt towards guns, the Democrats made this an important part of their platform. The Midterms are approaching quickly, and many Democrats are stressing the importance of gun violence and the need for stricter guns laws. Additionally, the House minority leader, Nancy Pelosi, told the Parkland students that gun control will be the priority for the Democrats after the midterms.

These students from Parkland created a change in society and made the world realize that kids voices really do matter.
