This is the home page for MATH 033 – Mathematics for Sustainability.  This is a new course at Penn State (University Park) which will be offered for the first time in Spring 2015.   The course is scheduled MWF at 2:30-3:20 pm in 115 Osmond.

MATH 033 is intended for students who are not mathematics majors and want to earn GQ (General Education – Quantification) credit while also studying sustainability from a mathematical perspective.   We’ll learn how to analyze sustainability issues by asking fundamental mathematical questions: how large? how fast? how risky? how connected?  These skills will benefit you as a worker, as a consumer, and as an informed citizen.

The course will not require any mathematical background beyond high school algebra.  It will give students many opportunities to develop and present their own applications of the mathematical techniques to sustainability problems of their own choice.

If you are interested in sustainability and ready for a different kind of math course, sign up for Math 33.  (Enrollment is limited!)   If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me, the course developer, Professor John Roe.
