Problems Anyone

The biggest problem I see our group running into is deciding on what side to take on the argument of fracking. This is such a controversial topic that we need to be very careful of our approach and must back up our research well. I think a good idea is to start with a argument against fracking and why so many people are critical of it and then conclude with how so much has changed over the years and how now it is a great idea for energy for this country. This allows our audience to understand why it has come under the radar as being a very dangerous process, but then also allows them to see how it has grown over the years and how the regulations have become more tight and less damage is being done by the fracking process. This then allows us to close our controversy with a strong push for fracking and why it is so beneficial for this country.

Overall, with a good outline for this project I feel we should have a great opportunity to not only present our argument, but to persuade some people for it as well. That is the goal of this project and hopefully we can accomplish it.

Frack Frack Frack

As most know, we are doing our documentary on fracking and the controversy around it. As a whole, we are trying to explore both sides of the coin and see if one side outweighs the other. We have split off what we want to individually accomplish and then we will bring it together as a whole and pull this project together. Hopefully by the end of this project, people will be more informed of fracking and its positives and negatives.

My role is to possibly find interviews and articles written by people in the fracking industry. I will then take this information and weigh it with the opinions of those who oppose fracking. It will be great to see what the industry says about fracking and then also see what the public thinks as well. I have  a friend whose dad is in the fracking industry and his interview will be attempted to be obtained. A first hand account could really improve our credibility on an already controversial topic. This information will be presented in an organized and informed way. I will use pictures, statistics, and slides to help make this as easy as possible. When explaining all this to my audience, I will take a confident tone and trust my sources.

When one looks at our project as a whole it should be quite strong. Fracking is something that not too many people are well informed about so it is great that we will be getting information out to the public. Our goal in this research is to find if fracking is worth all the trouble that it has been deemed. We are trying to tackle this from all angles and get multiple sources from different areas of fracking. Environmental aspects, power, and the race for natural resources will all be mentioned. Fracking is here and takes place in Pennsylvania. Is it worth it? We hope to find out.

History of a Public Controversy

Our group has decided on fracking and I coulnd not be more excited. It is a great topic to explore becuase Pennsylvania is one of the nation’s leading energy suppliers via fracking. This project opens up many possible ideas. I believe it will be important for our viewers to not only udnerstand fracking by definition but also to perhaps view it through a video or even a live feed. Important things that will be necessary for research are: what percentage of the country’s power comes from fracking, and what percentage of the country’s pollution comes from fracking. These two topics will be the weight of the entire presentation and determining if one outweights the othere will be very important in proving if fracking is here to stay or if it needs to go.

Energy plays such a vital role in our lives that there should be no problem in attracting an audience. After doing research it will be important to decide which side of the coin we feel as a group is better. This will also prepare us for those against the viewpoint we have and we will have to rememeber to still reach out to the audience as a whole. This is always vital in portraying anything to an audience.

Fracking looks to be a great topic and it will be exciting to research and see just how much it affects our daily lives here in Pennsylvania.

Public Controversy

Deciding on a topic for our group’s public controversy was no easy task. There are millions of topics to choose from and many more pop up each day. We decided we wanted to do something that related to us on a more personal level and so tentatively decided on fracking as our topic of choice.

Hydraulic Fracturing is the process of drilling into reservoir rock formations and releasing petroleum, natural gas and other abundant energy sources. So what is so controversial about this process? Fracking can cause air pollution and ground water toxication that can be very unhealthy. Over the past few years it has been a hot topic for debate and the main argument is does the good outweigh the bad consequences of this process.  It is a very interesting topic because it shows how far we will go to get energy sources for our state. This will be a great controversy to discuss and its long term impacts will be analyzed. On a broader note this also touches on the everlasting search for renewable enregy and the means to obtain it. Wheter we implement that toipic or not will be decided.

Of course this reamins a tenative subject.  Other ideas included capital punishment and gentic modification. These topic are a bit harder as the arguement of religion comes into play but still remain possible choices as well.

Just text me….

I have decided to do my paradigm shift on the movement from one on one in person conversations to the use of social media. An evolution has occurred in the last decade where we are seeing people opt to use electronic and social media over meeting in person to discuss things. There is a debate on whether this movement is for the better or not. It has been a hot topic on how healthy conversation is through the use of social media over actual physical contact. I want to research this topic and see if this shift to social media is hampering our ability to effectively communicate with each other on a more personal level.

Pros- ability to communicate faster, allows people to reach out to those far away, and network more easily with friends and family.

Cons- hinders the ability to personally get to know someone, the issue of a social wall, and how it also can hinder communicational development.

Introduction- This will introduce my paradigm shift and give a brief discussion of the shift from one on one conversation to the use of social media.

The first paragraph will give background information about the evolution of the cell phone and the internet and how this changed our ability to communicate with each other.

Then I will discuss whether this shift was unavoidable or not and the consequences it presented to society as a whole. Research on whether it is good or bad for communication in society will also be discussed. Does social media create a wall between people?

I will then address both sides of the argument of how social media is good communication or it is ineffective because it hinders the ability to develop personal relationships due to lack of emotion.

Conclusion?

This is just a rough outline it is subject to change of course.

Thank You for Smoking

I decided to do my rhetorical analysis on the movie, Thank you for Smoking. My main analysis will be about the movie’s man character, Nick Naylor. Naylor uses rhetoric skillfully and attempts to convince his own audience that smoking is not harmful to your health.  This is interesting to me because I want to understand how he is so successful at arguing against what could almost be considered a commonplace. Logos, Ethos, and Pathos all appear in this movie in many forms and persuasion is at an all time high. How he accomplishes  each of these rhetorical appeals will be discussed.

Some things I am going to focus on are:

My audience which I think will be college students and I will try to demonstrate to them how one can use rhetoric for almost any purpose.

Two scenes I will pay close attention to are when he uses rhetoric to persuade an anti smoker to take a bribe to stop campaigning against tobacco and how he wins his court argument by persuasion and “sleight of mouth.”

An interesting quote at the end of the movie is this: ” Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I talk. Everyone has a talent. ” This will also be a major focus in my article because I want people to understand that if one masters rhetoric it can useful for almost any situation one can encounter. This should be a fun paper and also an interesting one as the topic is outside the box.

Rhetorical Analysis Essay Topics

I decided I wanted to do a topic that would really interest me and be very different also. I narrowed all my topics down and here are the three that made the cut.

Thank You for Smoking

This movie offers a very interesting take on rhetoric as it is used in a way very unconventional to us.  Nick Naylor is a spokesman for a big tobacco business and tries to convince people that smoking isn’t bad. It would very cool to analyze this movie and see if Naylor’s tactics are actually successful.

Joe Paterno Billboard

A recent billboard was unveiled that supported Joe Paterno and stated,”you can’t cover up 50 years of success with honor.” I would analyze how effective this billboard is, does it get its message across, and the history surrounding this controversy.

Please God I’m only Seventeen!

This is a poem I first heard during my driver’s ed class. It is an emotional poem written about a kid who dies in a car crash due to his own reckless driving. It is used to make new driver’s understand just how awful the consequences are for reckless and careless driver. I thought it did a very good job in illustrating its point when I first heard it. It would be an interesting topic to rhetorically analyze.

Civic Engagement Assignment (1) Stop Crime

While I was looking at my hometown’s website, I came across an ad called Crime Stoppers. Basically, it is a volunteer service group dedicated to reducing the crime rate around my hometown. Rewards are provided for any information about local crimes and this group is based on the principle that someone other then a criminal has information that can solve a crime. So some may ask, are these people vigilantes? No, they do not take justice into their own hands, but rather they call the Crime Stopper’s hotline if they see any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. This got me thinking, how does this civic duty incorporate rhetoric and being a good citizen. In order to answer these questions, I decided to do my speech on it.

I will spend approximately two minutes describing what the flyer looks like and what exactly being part of the crime stoppers means. This will familiarize my audience with what I am talking about and help them understand the purpose of this volunteer group.

The last three minutes of my speech will talk about how one can effectively use rhetoric in helping out their community while also being a good citizen. I will discuss how one should go about reporting a crime, what forms of rhetoric may be used if one is called to court, and how all this ties into our civic duty. Finally, I will once again sum up the overall purpose of this group, who can be a crime stopper, and how this exemplifies good citizenship.
