I Thought Ariana Grande Was a Font

A couple of nights ago I was scrolling down the home page of BuzzFeed and noticed a post in the bottom left side of my screen entitled “The Ariana Grande Frappuccino.” Millions of different thoughts rushed through my mind that varied from believing that this drink was a spoof to believing that this was another fake post created by a teen to get attention. After several thoughts and a couple of Snapchats sent I decided to run to Starbucks and order an Ariana Grande Frappuccino.

To order an Ariana Grande Frappuccino first you will need to order my personal favorite Starbucks Secret Menu Beverage the “Cotton Candy Frappuccino”, which consists of ordering a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino and adding two pumps of Raspberry Syrup. Afterwards you will need to ask for an extra pump of Mocha Syrup, some Mocha Chips, whipped cream and some drizzled caramel on the top. Please note that this is the order for a “standard” (Grande) Ariana Grande Frappuccino, if you wished to order a larger size you would need to ask for one and a half extra pump of every ingredient per incensement in cup size. As you guys might assume, I don’t want to know what the sugar content or calorie content this beverage contains.

My first impression of The Ariana Grade Frappuccino recipe was not as positive since it consisted in lots, perhaps too many, additional syrups and sugars that made me hesitate. After all, who would want to pay extra money for an item that they won’t like? However, that afternoon I felt adventurous and decided to try it. As expected, the beverage was pretty much drenched in sugars and syrups. The taste, nevertheless, was pretty delicious. The beverage resembles a diet or smoother cookies and crème milkshake texture. I think that the addition of the mocha chips in the beverage causes this since it gives the beverage that sweet “crunch” you find in tiny chocolate chip based foods, like in the Cookie Crip Cereal, or the Bitter Sweet Mint ice cream from The Creamery. I also believe that the Ariana Grande Frappuccino has a very peculiar taste, perhaps almost an acquired taste, since it has layers of different flavors. In fact, the way each ingredient fades in your mouth into the next, leading almost a harmonic burst of flavor reminds me of the way the trident layer gum melts in your mouth from flavor to flavor. Regardless of what I first thought about The Ariana Grande Frappuccino, after I tried it I must admit the beverage is pretty tasty. As BuzzFeed stated in their article The Ariana Grande Frappuccino is a “Disco Techno circus party in my mouth (Brantz, 2015).”

I guess the pop singer was right, now she has one less problem. She no longer has to worry about getting her name messed up at Starbucks.

The Breakfast Beverage

Usually when I wake up, two completely different scenarios can happen. I both wake up and become a dream for the sugar-like-food-industries (like Lucky Charms or Coco-Puffs) or, I wake up and simply do not feel hungry, but binge eat sweets all morning long. Logically, when I saw that Starbucks offered cereal-like-flavors in its secret menu I absolutely lost it and decided to try one. The secret menu offers an abundance of cereal flavors, from captain-crunch to cookie crisp, I’m pretty certain you find almost any cereal you think of. Nevertheless, that morning I decided one of my all-time favorite cereal flavors as a beverage – A Cinnamon Toast Crunch Frappuccino. At first I was somewhat scared. I mean, the idea of having a cereal flavored drink doesn’t sound very pleasing off the bat. However, what is life if you don’t do thinks outside of the box?

Let me tell you, this has been one of the best impulsive decisions I have ever made!

My first impression of the Frappuccino was that it seemed normal. When I read the recipe and knowing the texture of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal, I envisioned the Frappuccino as a hazel colored beverage that was going to be over-powdered on cinnamon sugar and drenched in sugar. Surprisingly enough this was not the case. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch Frappuccino looks at first glance like a regular Caramel Frappuccino with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar and no caramel drizzle. In fact, the beverage itself looks a little dull in my opinion (perhaps I think about it as dull because of image I had in my mind). Nevertheless, The Cinnamon Toast Crunch Frappuccino taste is nothing but far from dull. The beverage itself if very rich in flavor and the way it’s prepared allows you to taste different stages, or layers, of the drink. At first, you taste that nice sweet smoothness you expect any Frappuccino to have. Second, you taste a very subtle cinnamon flavor that burst in your mouth and stays long enough for you to enjoy the taste, but not long enough for you to feel overwhelmed. In a nut shell, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Frappuccino taste exactly the same as the cereal, while still avoiding the overwhelming use of powder sugar and cinnamon sugar.

As if the taste wasn’t surprisingly enough, ordering this beverage is extremely easy as well. All you have to do is order a White Mocha Frappuccino, add Cinnamon Dolce Syrup (1 pump for a tall, 1 ½ pumps for a grande or 2 pumps for a venti), add Hazelnut Syrup (1 pump for a tall, 1 ½ pumps for a grande or 2 pumps for a venti), ask for some blended cinnamon sugar to be blended and, if you wish, top it with whipped cream and extra cinnamon sugar. If one day you’re feeling very adventurous and would like to have your breakfast as a beverage (literally) I would strongly recommend you to try the Starbucks Cinnamon Toast Crunch Frappuccino.

The Butterbeer Frappuccino

Currently my roommate is reading the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book, so I decided to commemorate Harry Potter by uncovering the Butterbeer Frappuccino from the Starbucks secret menu. As tasty as this beverage might sound it is probably one of the most tedious beverage’s to order because, as some of you may know, the items from the secret menu are ordered by naming what elements you want in your beverages (e.g. what kind of milk, how many shots of coffee, what type and how many pumps of syrup you want in your beverage etc.) rather than by name.

Once you are ready to place your order ask your barista for a tall Crème Frappuccino Base, but make sure not to “skim” the base by asking for soy or non-fat milk since whole milk is required for this specific beverage, then, ask for 3 pumps of caramel syrup, 3 pumps of toffee nut syrup and top your beverage with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. Please note that this is the recipe for a Tall (small) Butterbeer Frappuccino, therefore if you wish to order your beverage on a larger size you will need to adjust the syrup pumps by adding half a pump per size. For example, if you wish to order your Butterbeer Frappuccino on a Grande cup (medium) you would ask for three and a half pumps of each syrup, and if you wish to order your Butterbeer Frappuccino on a Trenta cup (extra-large) you would ask for four pumps of each syrup.

The Butterbeer Frappuccino texture can be best described as a marriage between a float and a slushy, which means it contains just the right amount of sugar for it to be sweet yet still remain smooth. In addition to its already curious yet sticking taste, the Butterbeer Frappuccino has some sort of “air” bubbles that give this Frappuccino a unique texture. However, because of its peculiar texture make sure to order it as a Frappuccino because if not your beverage will taste very unpleasant and overwhelmingly sugary. Thus if you really want your beverage to be in a more liquid texture rather than a icy-frappuccino texture, I would recommend ordering it iced since the ice might balance the over-powering sugar taste.

To be quite honest, there is no word I can think if to describe its flavor rather than yummy. For starters, its flavor is very peculiar (I at least, had never drank anything like it) it sort of resembles the taste of the butterscotch candy that comes in the golden wrapper made into a slushy-float. Additionally, the smoothness of the float and the clumpy sensation of the slushy leave a refreshing yet addicting taste in your pallet that makes you want to have more every time you sip your beverage. The Starbucks Butterbeer Frappuccino is indeed quiet a wizardly drink.

A Big Debut for Starbucks

I absolutely LOVE to go to Starbucks when its decorated for winter since it pretty much looks like Christmas threw up in the store because of all the decorations, music and change in menu Starbucks makes. However, this holiday season Starbucks debuted a new drink to their winter collection, which is something they had not done in five long years. This beverage is the Chestnut Praline Latte, and it is now being served next to the Starbucks winter famous drinks like the Peppermint Mocha and the Caramel Brulee. I tried the Chestnut Praline Latte tonight when I was coming back from a project field trip for my EGEE 102H class, and let me tell you guys, this beverage is AMAZING! However, it doesn’t just taste amazingly sweet and yummy, but it smells SO GOOD! I am not kidding, but if this where in a perfume bottle I would seriously purchase it and use it everyday.

The Chestnut Praline Latte is different than the rest of the Starbucks winter drinks since its taste is so soft and smooth compared to the rest of the winter drinks. For instance, this beverage does not have a bold after taste like the Peppermint Mocha that will take you by surprise 10 seconds after you take a sip, instead the Chestnut Praline Latte will sweeten your mouth and smoothly go down giving you a nice warm sensation in your mouth similar to the sensation oven fresh baked cookies leave you with. Additionally, the Chestnut Praline Latte has crunchy-spiced praline crumbs that give you a nice little something to bite on after you indulge your drink. Nevertheless, the best part about this drink is that it is not fatting at all, in comparison to the other Starbucks winter beverages. A short (7 oz.) Chestnut Praline Latte only has 190 calories from which 70 are from fat. A tall (12 oz.) Chestnut Praline Latte has 270 calories from which 100 are from fat. The grande (16 oz.)Chestnut Praline Latte has 330 calories from which 120 are form fat. The venti (20 oz.) has 440 calories from which 140 are from fat.

Recreating this beverage is a little bit more complicated but if your culinary techniques are good, or if you simply want to give it a try, fallow this is the recipe:

  1. Boil milk of your choice and stir it until it begins to bubble.
  2. On a separate pan, begin caramelizing some crumbled chestnut, by slowly adding honey to the pan.
  3. After the milk has been boiled add 1 to 2 shots of espresso and mix it all together before adding it to a mug.
  4. Add 1-2 pumps of spiced caramel syrup

5.Once your coffee is in a mug top it with whipped cream and add the caramelized chestnut

Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato

I am a huge macchiato drinker, and because it is fall I thought it would be fun to reveal to you guys The Starbucks Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato! The Starbucks Caramel Macchiato is perfection in a cup; it is rich in flavor, creamy and perfectly sweet.

Macchiatos are a mixture of milk, espresso, and some sort of syrup or sauce and can be ordered as a hot beverage or a cold beverage. Because Macchiatos are made up of soft and tasteful ingredients, they are a customer’s favorite. However, Starbucks offers only three types of Machiattos in their “visible” menu: The Hazelnut Macchiato, The Caramel Macchiato and the Vanilla Macchiato. Nevertheless, you can make them taste differently all year round just by asking your barista to drizzle a different flavor of syrup on top, for instance chocolate sauce rather than caramel. Even though this Starbucks life hack is available all year round, the Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato is available only during the fall, since it is the only time of the year Starbucks offers pumpkin spices.

The Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato is created as easily as any of the other Macchiatos Starbucks has to offer. All you do is follow the Caramel Macchiato recipe, but substitute the Vanilla Syrup with Pumpkin Syrup and top your beverage with pumpkin spice. In other words, during the fall you can just ask for a Caramel Macchiato, substitute the Vanilla Syrup with Pumpkin Syrup, and ask for the Pumpkin Spice topping. The Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato is available in four sizes, short (or extra small), tall (or small), grande (or medium), and venti (or large), and is consisted of a decent amount of calories, anywhere between 200 to 500 depending on the size of your cup and the amount of syrup that was drizzled.

As you can probably guess, recreating this beverage is extremely easy. All you’re going to need is milk of your preference, 1-2 shots of espresso (this depends on the size of your cup & coffee tolerance), pumpkin syrup and some pumpkin spice. However, if you want to recreate the cold version of the Starbucks Caramel Macchiato make sure to have around ¼ of a cup of ice. Once you have all of your ingredients you are going pour about 1/3 of a cup of milk into a pan and allow it to get warm. Then you are going to pump two to three pumps of pumpkin syrup into your cup (two if it’s a regular sized cup and three if it’s a relatively big cup). It is important to keep in mind the size of your cup when pumping the syrup because if not you can make your beverage either to sweet or too bitter. Once you milk is all warmed up simply pour it into your cup and sprinkle some pumpkin spice. If you want to go all out with your drink you could first add whipped cream and them sprinkle your pumpkin spice. In order to recreate the cold version of the Starbucks Caramel Pumpkin Macchiato, all you need to do is add the ice before you sprinkle or top your beverage. Eve though it may seem unnecessary to warm up your milk since you will be cooling it off later on, it is important for you to fallow this step since warming up the milk is what adds that bold creamy flavor to your Macchiato.

FUN FACT: The word macchiato means marked.

Hot Chocolate? Coffee?

My guilty pleasures are sweets; whether it is candy or chocolate, I absolutely cannot stop myself from having them on a daily basis. Similarly to sweets, I cannot go without having at least one cup of coffee a day, which is why recently I have been trying to tackle down both of my guilty pleasures with one item. This item is the Salted Caramel Mocha.

The Salted Caramel Mocha from Starbucks is like the hot chocolate item of the menu, since it has more of a chocolate texture and flavor than of a coffee. The sweetness of this beverage is just like a caramel filled chocolate; the first kick is rich and creamy, but then a caramel explosion occurs in your mouth. However, because of the sea salt that tops your beverage, the Salted Caramel Mocha is not too sweet.

The Salted Caramel Mocha is probably one of the most, if not the most, inexpensive and easiest Starbucks drinks to recreate since it is based on eight ingredients, from which only five are essential. In other words, if you wished you could recreate this drink by only using five of the eight ingredients and it would taste exactly the same. The five essential ingredients are a shot of espresso, mocha sauce, milk (any type you wish), caramel syrup and sea salt. The other non-essential ingredients, that will make your beverage tastier, are whipped cream, toffee and hazelnut syrup.

Once you have all of your ingredients ready, you will first put about 1/3 of a cup of milk to warm up until it begins to obtain a creamy and bold texture. When the milk reaches this texture add about 2/3 of a cup of mocha sauce, or extract if you wish, to the milk and mix the ingredients together. As you mix, you will notice that your drink will begin to appear like a warm version of a chocolate fountain; when that texture begins to form you will add your espresso shot. It is important that you wait until the “chocolate fountain” texture appears to add your espresso shot because if not the coffee taste will chop out the rich chocolate taste. After you’ve added the espresso shot, you will need to pour your coffee into a mug and add caramel to your preference. Technically after this step your coffee is done because if you don’t want to craft an over the top Salted Caramel Mocha you can just sprinkle a little bit of sea salt and enjoy your coffee. However, if you are feeling somewhat more crafty you can first add some whipped cream, then you would drizzle some hazelnut syrup, and to finish you would sprinkle some toffee and sea salt and voila!

As implied by the name, or the ingredients, the Salted Caramel Mocha is not the healthiest of coffees, which is why I wouldn’t recommend purchasing any size bigger than a grade. The short (8oz) version of the Salted Caramel Mocha contains around 240 calories; the tall (12oz) version of the Salted Caramel Mocha contains around 340 calories, the grande (16oz) version of the Salted Caramel Mocha contains about 430 calories; and, the venti (20oz) version of the Salted Caramel Mocha contains about 520 calories. However, keep in mind that these calories will vary depending on the ingredients you use. Avoiding the whipped cream and toffee, for instance, will result on a “healthier” version of the Salted Caramel Mocha.

Good bye Summer

Weather is changing, people are getting sick and summer is technically over, so what better way to cleanse your body and say bye to summer than by drinking tea, lemonade, or both at the same time! Starbucks Unsweetened or Sweetened Tevana Green Tea Lemonade is the drink to have during these days. Believe it or not, Starbucks Coffee also sells teas and they are DELICIOUS. Teas can be ordered in a variety of sizes (tall, grande, venti or trenta), flavors (green tea, green tea lemonade, peach tea, mojito tea, passion fruit tea, chai, vanilla rooibos tea, “zen” tea, black tea, grey tea and china tea), and could also be served shaken or iced. Despite all of the horizons you can explore at the Starbucks tea wonder, the green tea lemonade is the one to have!

Why this one specific tea? Well besides being my favorite, it is the perfect mixture of citrus that will help anyone get better from the flu and also say bye to summer with the taste of fresh fruit. The green tea lemonade has a soft and refreshing taste (specially if ordered sweetened) that reminds me of the Pure Leaf Tea brand, but with a more home-ish taste. Unlike all the other Starbucks Teas, the green tea lemonade can be made using the Tazo Green Tea that is found at the bottom cooler before the cashier at any Starbucks. Using the Tazo Grenn Tea will make your order about $1.00-$2.00 more expensive, depending on your size, but will add flavor to your drink.

The Starbucks Tevana Green Tea Lemonade contains anywhere from 60 to 120 calories depending on your size of choice. In other words, the green tea lemonade is relatively healthy. Also, the Tevana Green Tea Lemonade is made out of really simple ingredients, which makes it easy to replicate. All you will need is your favorite brand or kind of green tea with mint, your favorite brand or kind of lemongrass and lemon verbena, sugar, ice and a shaker, or a blender.

If you want to make your own green tea lemonade shaken, add about ½ of a cup of green tea with mint into the shaker. Then, add about ½ of lemongrass and lemon verbena, pour sugar, if you want it sweetened, to your taste, and shake! Once you shake all of your ingredients into your very own green tea lemonade, fill about ¼ of your cup with ice and your green tea lemonade. Top it with some grinded mint leafs or cilantro and enjoy! If you want to make your own iced green tea lemonade follow the same recipe, but instead of pouring everything into the shaker, pour it into the blender (this includes the ¼ cup of ice). Once you have blended everything top it with some grinded mint leafs or cilantro and enjoy! If for some reason your blender isn’t able to blend ice well, you can add some water to the mix and the texture will be easier to blend, you could also shake the ice in the shaker and lave your lemonade with a more “frozen” texture.

The Legally Illegal Coffee

A couple days ago on Sunday September 15, 2014 to be exact, I stayed up until two am in order to practice my RCL speech. The next morning I had to wake up at six in order to arrive to The Hub early and print out my speech outline. I noticed that the line at Starbucks was relatively short (compared to the hectic line it usually has) so I decided to try an item from the secrete menu that I had been curious to try for the longest time, Starbucks “Liquid Cocaine”.

The name of this item has always intrigued me. How can a company name a beverage after one the world’s most dangerous drug? However, when I saw the ingredients that this specific coffee contained the name magically made sense.  The Liquid Cocaine is only available as a grande (or medium) but I can guarantee you that the caffeine rush will last all day. This coffee wonder is composed by four shots of espresso, four pumps of white chocolate syrup or white mocha syrup and ice. This beverage is composed by pure sugar and caffeine and therefore will keep you awake throughout the entire day, even when you are running on four hours of sleep. If you are one of the vast majorities that dislikes pure coffee or even coffee in general, then you might want to consider adding the milk of your preference (Almond, Soy or maybe Pumpkin) in order to lighten the taste.

Even though this coffee might seem as the Starbucks coffee world wonder, what I like the most about it is that it is pretty simple to do at home, and recreate in order to make it more appealing to your taste. For example, if I were to recreate The Liquid Cocaine, I would add 2 ½ shots of espresso, add 2 pumps of white chocolate syrup, fill ½ of the cup with soy-almond flavored milk, add ice, stir the coffee mixture, later on add some whipped cream and sprinkle some grinded cinnamon. This remake of the Starbucks Liquid Cocaine should make the taste somewhat more flexible and ensure a rich coffee taste, but with a softer and smoother end.

This is the perfect beverage to order after an all-nighter, a late study session, during finals week, or even if you are simply addicted to caffeine. This is the beverage to order if you want your eyes to open to the size of an owl’s eyes. However, because of the high level of caffeine The Liquid Cocaine beverage contains I would not recommend drinking too often, since it could later on bring health problems.  Nevertheless, if you do find yourself at Starbucks one day completely drained out of energy and decide to ask your barista for this secret menu item, do not ask for some “Liquid Cocaine”, say the ingredients you want in your coffee instead; asking for liquid cocaine might get you kicked out of the Starbucks location, or could take you to the police station due to the demanding illegal substances.

The Pumpkin Spiced Latte is Back

The past days at State College, PA have been chilly; which is no surprise of why Starbucks has re-integrated the Pumpkin Spiced Latte to their menu. The Pumpkin Spiced Latte is composed by pumpkin puree, vanilla syrup, pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin flavored milk, espresso shots, and whipped cream. Nevertheless, the ingredients portions change according to the size ordered. If ordered tall (or small) the Pumpkin Spiced Latte is averaged to have 300 calories, from which 100 are fat calories. If ordered grande (or medium) the Pumpkin Spiced Latte is averaged to have 380 calories, from which 120 are fat calories. If ordered venti (or large) the Pumpkin Spiced Latte is averaged to have 470 calories, from which 140 are fat calories.

Nevertheless the Pumpkin Spiced Latte can be ordered hot or cold, meaning that this acclaimed beverage can warm you up on cold days with its creamy foamy flavor, or it can cool you off with its refreshing, creamy-iced flavor. If ordered hot, you will receive a rich creamy beverage toped with whipped cream and foam, which means your coffee will have a soft and smooth taste that resembles the texture found in warm boiled milk. If ordered cold your coffee will be prepared without the foam, and placed in a cup with ice-cubes and whipped cream. The absence of the foam will make your coffee somewhat thicker, yet the creamy texture will still be preserved. The coffee will be refreshing enough to quench your thirst and cool you off from the sun, similar to what an iced cold Kool-Aid would do.

Regardless of your temperature preference, the Pumpkin Spiced Latte will bring fall to your pallet in very sip. The orange color your coffee will obtain resembles the orange color the trees around you will express. The pumpkin flavor will tie perfectly into the season’s atmosphere and holidays. There is no doubt that the Pumpkin Spiced Latte is the favorite fall Starbucks coffee.

If you wished to prepare this fall favorite beverage at home, you would make it following the instructions of the Starbucks tall Pumpkin Spiced Latte version, which is similar in size to a regular coffee mug. First you would add milk and pumpkin puree to a saucepan and allow it to reach a heated temperature, without boiling it. Once it has reached a hot appealing temperature you would add ½ spoon of vanilla syrup, ½ spoon of a pumpkin pie spice and 1-2 shots of espresso (depending on your coffee preference).  If you want to have this drink hot, stir constantly as you add the ingredients, once you’ve created a foamy layer pour your beverage into a mug, top it off with whipped cream, more pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon sticks and enjoy! If you want to have this drink cold simply fill about 1/3 of your mug with iced cubes, then add your coffee mixture into your mug and top it off with whipped cream, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon sticks and enjoy! If done correctly your homemade pumpkin spiced latte should take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Passion Blog Ideas

When I first read about this assignment, the first thing that came into my mind was a coffee related blog. I absolutely love coffee; I drink two to three cups everyday in different style, flavors and manners. In fact, sometimes I visit Starbucks three times a day whether it is to grab a coffee and go or sit down and enjoy a book while a take small “sips”. Therefore, I can write a review about a new coffee I try at Starbucks or discovered from their not-so-secret menu. Everything from cappuccinos to Captain Crunch flavored Frappuccino’s can be found there and every week I will uncover the deliciousness the Starbucks menu has to offer. I could also include some posts that involve more coffee-concentrated drinks that may become useful for everyone who didn’t have much sleep, or might going through finals week! However, I am aware that a lot of people aren’t as much as a coffee drinker as I am or do not simply like caffeine, so I will also be writing a blog post about Starbucks smoothies & tea variety. In fact, for this specific blog post I might even be able to include the Starbucks “recipes” so that my readers can order something that interested them or, in a more adventurous note, can try to create them at home.

Another idea that came through my mind when I read about this assignment was discovering a new “underground” song every week. In other words, rather than going into iTunes to find the new “next” hit, people can go into my blog and discover a new “deep house” song that is enjoyable. Even though this might be seen as a controversial topic since everyone has different taste in music, I am willing to ask my blog readers to leave comments with a certain rhythm, artist or style they would like to see me blog the most about. However this does not mean I will not write about some songs from artists that are already famous, this just means that I wont be blogging about the songs that are already famous from these artists. I like to think about this blog idea as the “underground” trail of deep house music.

The third idea I have for my passion blog is more of a fun, creative and artsy idea since it consists of writing about different inexpensive DIY projects that a college student could do to upgrade certain objects they previously owned. For instance, I can write a post about how to turn your old red sneakers into “watermelon shoes”, or how to turn your old broken shower catty into a desk organizer. In other words, my DIY blog would be a nice fun way that college students could turn to see what to do with their free time, or a blog they can rely on to learn how turn their something old into something new. From shoes to lamps, this DIY blog will teach my readers how to upgrade their dorm room without spending much money, if any.
