Aaron Knochel, PI

Assistant Professor of Art Education in the School of Visual Arts (SoVA) at The Pennsylvania State University. He has worked over the past three years on a range of grant-funded projects that explored STEAM curriculum and 3D printing with secondary teachers, led digital design and fabrication workshops for the Master Teachers Program for STEM teachers in New York State, and developed cutting edge art and technology coursework for preservice art educators exploring mobile computing, geolocation, digital fabrication, and interactive media. Tom Lauerman, Co-PI

Assistant Professor of Art at The Pennsylvania State University. He is a studio artist working in a range of materials and processes, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Tom’s work integrates digital fabrication technologies with traditional art & craft techniques in a range of materials including wood, clay, plaster, and paper. Over the past year Tom has worked in collaboration with Penn State’s School of Engineering’s Learning Factory program to develop an open source print head for 3d printing in clay using existing consumer grade equipment. Nicholas Meisel, Co-PI

Assistant Professor of Engineering Design and Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering Design Technology, and Professional Programs at The Pennsylvania State University. He is the director of the Made by Design Lab, which conducts research in the area of design for AM as well as the use of AM technology in engineering education. His past research has centered on high-level AM design innovation, process-structure-behavior relationships in material jetting processes, and open-access AM on student engagement with design and manufacturing.

Swapnil Sinha, Graduate Assistant

Swapnil Sinha is a graduate student in the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs at Penn State University. She is currently pursuing her masters in Engineering Design and her research work mainly focuses on additive manufacturing with embedding capabilities. For the mobile maker space project, Sinha is in charge of designing a curriculum around the concepts of additive manufacturing.

Kelsey Rieger, Graduate Assistant

Kelsey Rieger is a graduate student in the Penn State School of Visual Arts. Her professional background is in museums and community arts engagement, and she is currently pursuing her masters degree in art education. She is assisting the team in the development of multidisciplinary curriculum and program coordination.

Luke Meeken, Graduate Assistant

Luke Meeken is a PhD Candidate in the Penn State School of Visual Arts. His professional background is in arts education with digital materials. He is co-developing the Mod extensions of the MAKE 3D curriculum and assisting with the revision, publication, and organization of the curricular materials. Julian Childs-Walker, Fabrication Specialist

Julian Childs-Walker received a B.A. in Physics from Carleton College and has experience teaching high school math and science, working as a carpenter and adventuring in the outdoors. He came to Penn State University to study ceramics in 2016 and has enjoyed helping out on the Eager:Maker project.
