Your goals this week is to begin orienting yourself with sites.psu.edu, which is powered by WordPress—the main web interface through which you will feature all of your projects. Making a blog is the beginning of organizing your thoughts and sensitizing yourself visually to the web world, along with the many images that you see everyday online.
To begin:
Create a WordPress account through sites.psu.edu and orient yourself to the system. Blogs are an excellent way to build an online web presence and to create a personal e-portfolio.
Create a blog at sites.psu.edu by choosing a domain name and a site title. Once the account has been created, click on the site to open it. (Keep in mind that if you intend to continue to use the site as a portfolio after the course you should choose a name that can be professionally presented to the public—e.g. unless you are in the field of sports management with a specialty in hockey, “hockeyfreaksrule” is probably not appropriate).
Familiarize yourself with WordPress—at the top of your page you will see your site title…click on it and choose the Dashboard. Central on the board you’ll see the “Learn More About Getting Started” page—read through this tutorial.

Warm Up Assignment:
Create an “About Me” page in which you introduce yourself, tell us why you’re taking More Than A Selfie (a requirement for Upward Bound, or your interested in finding a creative hobby, etc.)
Step 1: Go to sites.psu.edu and use your log-in PSU ID information to sign up and create a site. To demonstrate your functionality in sites.psu.edu, create a blog with a theme. There are plenty to choose from.
Step 2: Create an About Me front page.
You will create a front page that will be your “About Me” page that explains who you are, why you are taking this course and what you hope to achieve by taking it, including but not limited to:
- How does this course relate/doesn’t relate to your area of study in school?
- Your connection to art and design (Do you make art as a hobby? When is the last time you took an art class? Are you a creative person?)
- What are your reasons for designing your blog with the color and theme choices that you chose?
- Who is your favorite visual artist? or famous work of art that you really like?
- A goal for yourself related to taking this art course?
- Let us know what your arts background is, where you are in terms of your degree, and anything else you think would be helpful for us to know about you.
Step 3: Leave a comment on this webpage below with the URL of your newly-made blog.
