The Home of the University Park and Eastern Railroad!
The Penn State Model Railroad Club – founded in 1955 – is founded on promoting the hobby of model railroading. We aim to educate all of the many facets of the hobby, including benchwork, art and scenery, landscape design, electrical engineering, and trains!
The club is currently housed in Research Modular Lab A on the eastern side of campus. We meet Mondays and Thursdays nights to work on projects and club materials. Our current pursuits involve a modular HO scale layout, a winter-themed N Scale layout, and electronic upgrades on our fleet of locomotives.

The Penn State Model Railroad Club was founded by Glen Van Winkle and received official recognition as a Penn State Club on March 23rd, 1955 . The club boasts numerous members from all different ages and backgrounds and proudly celebrated its 60th Anniversary on April 23rd, 2015; 60 years to the day of when construction began for our first layout. As of September 2022, the club has found a new home in a former lab space on the eastern side of campus. The club meets twice a week working on our modular layout, which is the 6th layout in the club’s 68-year lifespan.
We’re excited to share our work with all of you!
