Heather McCune Bruhn

Dr. Heather McCune Bruhn, Instructor of Art History at Penn State’s University Park Campus, started implementing OER into her course when a textbook publisher moved from having a new edition every five years to every two years.  Updating everything in the course website to go with the new version of the textbook was a huge challenge. “This course runs every semester and I was getting emails from students overseas, some in the military, who were not able to get the physical textbook, said McCune Bruhn, during the October 2, 2017 TLT Faculty OER Panel discussion.

When she started to develop Art History 112 she decided to go with the concept of no textbook. She uses the Met’s Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. This site includes short essays and a visual timeline. It’s a rich resource that is of very high level of quality, according to McCune Bruhn. She has used it to replace survey text readings.

The Louvre Museum Site is another site that she has found very useful. It is interactive and they have presentations and videos and everything is accessible for her online students that might need to have transcripts and captions.

Google allows students to go to the Google Cultural Institute.  Students can search for artists and have the ability to zoom in on their paintings and see cracks and wonderful details.
