Meeting Minutes – 10/27/15

Hello All, Tuesday night the outing club met and you should have been there. We heard a guest speaker from the SCA, quite a few trip reports, a wealth of announcements, and even had some members competitively bobbing for apples.

TRIP REPORTS

Tuscarora Trail – This leafpeeping overnight began with hangliding ramps, rednecks on motorcycles, and rocks painted rock-color, but by day 2 they found solitude in the wilderness.

Hammersly Wild Area – Under a dusty gray sky, PSOC members enjoyed hoofing it over ridge after ridge in this extremely rural part of Pennsylvania, and jumped into a frigid swimhole at dawn.

Pool Session – Aaron Fleishman himself was jealous as multiple PSOC members hit full 360 rolls, even without a paddle, in whitewater kayaks in the McCoy Natatorium.

Spring Creek – after practicing in the pool, several boats hit the local whitewater hole in Spring Creek near Bellefonte the following morning.

Lil’ Juniata – With Wet wetter hitting most of the state, Cherry Springs was again postponed, this time in favor of a scenic day hike in southwest Rothrock SF. PSOCers enjoyed scenic vistas and found a baby snake.

UPCOMING TRIPS

Owls – 11/5 – PSOC members will be visiting N. Saw-Whet Owl Banding Station in King’s Gap State Park, where PA’s smallest owls are captured from the forest at night as part of an ongoing scientific research project.

Kayak Pool Sessions – 11/18, 8-10pm – Spots remain for the upcoming pool session! The first 12 people to give Aaron Fleishman $5 will be signed up to receive professional whitewater kayaking instruction. Gear is provided, and if you have your own gear feel free to just show up (with $5). Come to practice your rolls or other technical skills. Email ajf200@psu.edu to for more info. One final fall session is scheduled for 12/9.
