Be an Outdoor School Counselor!

IMG_9008-400x266Penn State students can earn 2 credits by participating in Outdoor School (ODS) as cabin counselors. Returning counselors may advance to become Learning Group Leaders and can earn additional credits. Penn State students may also earn volunteer hours to satisfy community service requirements.

To participate in Outdoor School, Penn State students must first submit an application*. (See the sidebar for application dates and links.) Students who are accepted will be registered for SciEd 140 orRPTM 140, Outdoor School Field Experience for academic credit concurrent with ODS. Counselors attend two required training sessions prior to the start of Outdoor School. Course information and registration materials will be available at these trainings.

Hey All! 

Here’s a recap of what happened last night in Outing Club!
 
Upcoming Trips
 
Benji and Dimitri Backpacking (Friday 24th-Sunday 26th)
-15 to 20 miles in Bald Eagle State Park 
-There is still some space and the trip can really use drivers
-It will be rad, cold, mountainous, snowy…and there will be cheese. 
 
Kayak Sesh (Feb. and March)
-Training sessions at the nat that teach you basic skills like how to roll and navigate with a possible trip at the end. 
-They are fo free but sign up fast cause they fill up quick
-There will be more information to come at future
 meetings
 
Sam D’s Climbing
-Sam DeVries loves to climb and is willing to offer rides to the Y 
-Shoes and harnesses are free and its $3 to get in with your membership card
-climbing is Th 8-10pm, F 7-10 pm, and Sunday afternoon 
 
Cambin Camping Reward (Feb 1-2) 
-If you went to stadium cleanup you should have gotten an email from Aaron. Make sure to RSVP by the date in the email. 
-If you didn’t get an email and did go on Stadium cleanup email Aaron.

How to Join PSOC
-In order to go on trips you need to be a PSOC member
-To do this you need 3 things
-Copy of your insurance card (front and back)
-Membership form (can be found on our website)
-$20 dues (for trip fees, gas, food, ect)
-give these to Shaina and Meg at the meeting and your all set
-Any questions feel free to contact an officer

Meeting Minutes: December 10, 2013

Hey Guys!

Sorry for the confusion with the room for tonight’s meeting. Thank’s to everyone who still showed up despite the sudden location change! To all who couldn’t make it out here is what you missed tonight…
Upcoming Trips
 
Last minute Getaway (this friday to saturday)
-are you stressed about finals?
-Do you need one short trip outside to take a break from studying?
-Well Benji and some others are leaving campus friday afternoon walking to camp somewhere close up as one final getaway this semester. They will be back around Saturday afternoon.

Spring Break 
-You known who you are if you are going. Keep a look out for an email about the trip.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters 
-Phil from big brothers big sisters came to talk about the program and how they need YOU
-they are looking for volunteers that can commit to 9-12 months
-you should be able to commit 1-3 hours per week
-you will be paired with a little who you can bond with, form a great relationship with, and to whom you can act as a positive mentor

Josh and the AT
-For those of you who do not know PSOCER Josh Glazer is hiking the appalachian trail next semester!
-unfortunately he was no able to give his presentation but if you want to hike with Josh at all during his trip let him know!
-he will be updating a trail journal online about his wherearbouts to keep up all updated
-Here is a General Timeline in case you want to plan a trip to hike with him

Trip Reports 
Bald Eagle Trip 
-There were feasts a plenty all night and morning
-Everying Chilled (quite literally) around the campfire at night
-and they even got home before the snow hit to hard.
-Overall a great weekend for everyone!
Plunge!
-Polar Bear plunge was this mornin! g!
-It was really really cold but all those who went our felt good and alive
-Will probably happen again
Make Sure to hand in receipts by tomorrow so you can get reimbursed for any trips if you have not done so already 
 
Also make sure to pick up any checks from club sports that have not already been picked up 
 
Meetings next semester will be at Tuesdays in 105 osmond at 8 (we will send out a reminder after break)
 
Have a FANTASTIC winter break and goodluck on finals! Try to get Outside over break and make sure to stay stoked! 

Meeting Minutes: December 4, 2013

Hey There!
Here’s whats happening this week in Penn State Outin’ Club!
Trips Soon
 
Spring Break (march 8-15)
-Outing club is going southwest to Joshua tree, Death Valley, (buffets?), and more
-the trip is going to be capped at 12 people. 
-if you want to go email travis by tonight. 
-Keep in mind if you want to go you need to be in it to win it. We are buying tickets soon so you dont want to drop the trip and lose your plane ticket $$/take a spot from someone
-the trip will cost around $450 (airfare) and those involved in the club (stadium clean up, trip leaders, those who have gone on trips) will get first priority
 
Meg’s Sunrise hike (minus meg) + Stoff X infinity  (this thursday december 5)
-Stoff is going to continue megs sunrise hike THIS THURSDAY and maybe every thursday to come. 
-leaving early to see the sunrise over keith springs then will be back in time for 8ams (if you donthave an 8am then you can enjoy some waffles!)

Travis and Aaron Do Alaska
-travis and aaron went to Alaska since no one else! wanted to go for some ready
-they saw a pretty lake and aaron grew a brown pony tail and canoed with one paddle while travis fell in the lake 
-Daniel with the snow laden bear guided them through the wilderness and led them to the Alaskan whitehouse
-note: This is totally real…

Meeting Minutes 11/19

Attention Attention
Tonight’s edition of Outing Club has some very new, very important, and very exciting information. So put on your reading glasses, get comfortable, and get stoked! 
Up n’coming 
 
Outing Club Trail Crew/committee elections! (These details are also on the Facebook page)
-so for those of you who weren’t at the meeting outing club used to be really involved in trail maintenance and building. There are actually a couple trails named after the club
-this part of the club has since died out but we are bringing it back with the Rebirth of the PSOC trail Crew 
-The crew will work on trail maintenance, trail building, machetes, and much much more
-In order for this to work a trail committee will be made with 3 leaders:
-outreach captain (talk to parks, get permits, find out what needs to be done)
-logistics coordinator (Get gear, deal with reimbursements, make sure everything is good to go)
-communications (recruit new members, update the club on whats going on, fill out clubsports paperwork)
-Being a part of the committee is an awesome way to get involved with the club, the local community, work closely with the officers, and to be a a part of the start of a new part of PSOC history
-If you are interested in being on the committee email Aaron (avd5316@psu.edu) with your name and the position you would like to run for. 
-elections for these positions will be held on December 3rd
 
Spring Break Epic Adventure 
-Look for an email from Travis and/or Dillon this week with the details
Bald Eagle (12/7 to 12/8)
-the trip is full but has a short waitlist so there is still a chance to go
-email josh by Wednesday night at 8pm if you want to get on the waitlist
Polar Bear Plunge 
-possibly the morning the week before finals
-the perfect way to wake up and forget about the stress of impending finals

Paul wants to go backpacking
-Travis’s roommate, Paul, can’t make it to meetings but wants to go backpacking this weekend
-if you want to go backpacking too get a hold of paul and become friends.
Thonvelopes
-PSOC THON is writing thonvelopes the week after thanksgiving break
-if you know some people who might want to donate to thon, get a letter from you, or who you want to send mail let us know
-There will be a coloring party (several actually) to decorate the letters after thanksgiving break

-Probably not (because we aren’t quite sure that Benji can either)
