Walkable and Bikeable Communities

  • These projects attempt to better understand how the physical and social environment impact walking and biking to for physical activity or transportation.

Current and previous studies include:

  • An examination of resources to support active living in underserved Pittsburgh neighborhoods
  • Examining how business and universities can support biking
  • Complete Streets: Examining how policy and community design can impact physical activity
  • How social determinants of health, such as race, ethnicity and income, are related to physical activity social and physical environments
  • Examining how the physical environment in apartment complexes, neighborhoods and communities are related to physical activity participation
  • We collaborate with community and campus bike coalitions on many projects

Examining Individual, Community and Environmental Influences on Physical Activity Among College Students

This line of research examines the range of influences on physical activity participation. Learn more about the publications in this area here.

Current and previous studies include:

  • Mental health outcomes and physical activity: Examining how depression, stress, anxiety and other variables are impacted by physical activity participation.
  • Study habits, physical activity and fitness study: Examining how college students’ work habits are related to their physical activity participation and other objectively measured health outcomes
  • Previous physical activity experiences and fitness outcomes: An investigation of how participation in physical activity and physical education impact current behavior, fitness and health outcomes
  • The effect of college physical activity classes: Examining the long term impact on behavior, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs toward physical activity are impacted with a college physical activity class
  • Exercise is Medicine on Campus: Examining how a campus-wide educational intervention impacts students’ knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards physical activity

Understanding the Role of the Church in Health Promotion

  • This line of research includes several studies examining how the church as a social institution can impact health through various social, cultural, and environmental approaches

Current and previous studies include:

  • Faith-based organizations study: As a part of the faith-based sector of the National Physical Activity Plan, we examined how large faith-based organizations (e.g. conferences, diocese, conventions, synods) approach health.
  • Walking in Faith Clergy Health Program:  An online intervention targeting physical activity among current clergy members
  • Walking in Faith Seminary School Program: An online intervention targeting physical activity among future clergy members
  • Congregation Health Study: A study examining the physical and social environment for health at churches and the link with congregation members’ health
