Physical Activity in Diverse Populations: Evidence and Practice (Paperback) book cover

In Spring of 2015 Dr. Bopp was approached by Routledge Publishing, asking her to edit a text in line with the content of her class, KINES 425, covering how the social determinants of health can impact physical activity participation in a variety of populations. Dr. Bopp recruited the world’s leading experts to contribute to the text and it was released in the summer of 2017. This text covers diverse populations that have never been included in a text on physical activity participation. Race, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, military veterans status, disability level, and rural populations are all addressed in this text, examining how these determinants can impact health and activity and culturally tailored approaches to increasing participation. Classes taught by Dr. Bopp

Dr. Bopp teaches KINES 426, Physical Activity and Public Health typically 1-2 times a year. This class provides a foundation for Kinesiology students in public health. The course typically includes content on physical activity recommendations and the role of physical activity in the prevention of disease. We also cover how community, environment and policy can impact physical activity participation at a population level.  Dr. Bopp also teaches KINES 425W , Physical Activity in Diverse Populations. This class outlines how the social determinants of health (race, income, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, urban/rural status) can impact physical activity and health outcomes. This is a writing intensive class and students will learn how to critically evaluate research and scientific writing skills. This class helps to build cultural competency among Kinesiology students as they prepare for careers in health and wellness professions.
