Blog the Heights!

So if you happened to talk to me this week, I apologize, because I probably talked about how wonderful the Thespian’s production of In the Heights was this weekend.

Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, In the Heights is a great musical to show someone who’s not into the more “traditional” stuff. It tells the story of a group of people living in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in New York.

In addition to a Coach Franklin sighting and a guest appearance by Mike the Mailman, there were many reasons you should have saw the show this weekend.

#1  The Music is Incredible!

So admittedly I’m not the biggest fan of rap music, but the musical puts in so well in ways that are so catchy I literally downloaded the whole soundtrack yesterday.

Here’s a good example, taken from the Tony performance.

#2  The Cast was Super-Fun

I loved watching the chemistry between the cast members, especially between the lead Usnavi, and his cousin Sonny. Their bromance was funny to watch, especially when they celebrated after Vanessa agreed to go out with Usnavi. I also loved the salon owner, Daniela, who played her part so sassily. Not to mention the “piragua” guy, who came in with his song for some much-needed breaks in the tension.

#3 So Many Feels

In addition to being quite hilarious at times, this musical definitely packed an emotional punch. There’s Nina, who’s always been an achiever and “the one who made it out,” who then dropped out of college. She’s left to question who she is, and has to face her family, who scraped everything they had to send her to go. (Told beautifully in “Breathe”)

Add in more unrequited love and a death, and you can tackle about half of what In the Heights covers.

For those of you who saw it, what did you think?

  1. I saw the show over the weekend, and I’m so glad I went! I thought it was really good and that everyone was really talented. I had never seen the show and actually didn’t know too much about it, but the music was amazing and VERY catchy and I’ve actually downloaded a few of the songs to iTunes. Mike the Mailman was so adorable in the performance!

  2. I really wanted to go to In the Heights this weekend but I didn’t get around to it. I’m definitely going to listen to the soundtrack when I have a chance to, because I love discovering music from new broadway shows. This show seems unique and different from other shows I’ve seen, so it’s definitely on my bucket list!

  3. I did not get the chance to see this musical, but I had many friends who did and they all said it was AWESOME! I have one friend in the thespians who put the play on, and she says she thinks its even better than their productions of Chicago! I plan on going to see the thespian’s production next semester!

  4. I wanted to go this so badly! Everyone I know that went to said it was really well-done and enjoyable. Like you, I’m not all that crazy about rap music. I remember the first time someone tried to explain In The Heights to me, they mentioned that there was a rap element to it. I was confused “rap and Broadway?!” it seemed like an unlikely combination. I saw In The Heights about 4 years ago on Broadway and I loved it. The songs are catchy and I like it’s unique story and song style, it definitely stands out when compared to other Broadway shows.

  5. The show had a lot of potential, but there were a few aspects of it that I feel were a little bit of a letdown. Regardless, I really enjoyed the show and am glad I went! The Piragua guy was a huge highlight too. Unfortunately, James Franklin and Mike the Mailman were both not at the performance I saw 🙁 Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda is awesome. Here’s the video I told you about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNFf7nMIGnE

  6. Aw man, I love musicals, but I couldn’t make it to this! After this post, I so wish I had 😛 I can’t listen to the numbers right now, but I’ll be sure to check them out later. I’m going to have to be sure to check out more thespian events on campus….
