2/23 Meeting
Update: due to a last-minute family emergency, our guest speaker could not make it to our meeting to discuss the business side of engineering. Civil engineering professor Dr. Martin Pietrucha delivered a presentation on various human factors studies, and how they relate to transportation engineering. We thank Dr. Pietrucha for giving an excellent talk, particularly on such short notice.
1/26 Meeting
We’re back! Our first meeting of the Spring 2017 semester will be held on Thursday, January 26 at 6:00 pm in 109 Sackett.
We will have an introduction to the club for new members, discuss the semester’s plans and upcoming events, begin forming a Traffic Bowl team, and playing some transportation trivia to get us in the mood for Traffic Bowl. Members will also have a chance to pay dues ($10/semester). As always, pizza and soda will be provided!
11/10 Meeting
Our next meeting of the semester will be held on Thursday, November 10 at 6:00 pm in 106 Sackett. Penn State Altoona Rail Transportation Engineering (RTE) instructor Bryan Schlake will be presenting on the topic of rail transport in the US in a presentation titled “Railroad Transportation: Dead or Alive?”. This will be a great opportunity to learn about a transportation mode other than highways. Pizza and drink will be provided!
More about Bryan Schlake: Bryan Schlake, Instructor in Rail Transportation Engineering at Penn State Altoona, earned both a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His graduate research with the University of Illinois Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) involved analysis of freight car condition monitoring technologies. Post graduation he served in both management and engineering roles at Norfolk Southern Railway. In addition to investing in the next generation of railroad engineers, Bryan is involved with research related to rolling stock safety, training within industry, and application of lean production principles to railroad operations. He is also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and currently serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Penn State Chapter at University Park.
10/13 Meeting
Our annual Graduate Student Panel will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 6:00 pm in 362 Willard. Six grad students from all disciplines of CE to briefly talk about their experiences with grad school (classes, what kind of research/work they do, funding opportunities, etc.). The main objective is to provide information to people that have any interest in grad school. Most grad students will also talk about their real-world work experience, which could be helpful even to people not interested in grad school. The audience can also ask any questions they may have.
Food and drink will be provided, and you can also pay your dues. See you there!
9/22 Meeting
Our second general meeting of the semester will be Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 pm in 215 Hammond. Penn State Transportation Services director Rob DeMayo will be speaking about his experiences with event transportation planning and operations. We’ll also start arranging some social events, and you’ll have the chance to pay your dues. Pizza and soda will be provided!
9/1 Meeting
Welcome back! Our first meeting of the 2016 – 2017 school year will be held Thursday, September 1 at 6:00 pm in 108 Sackett.
For all the new members, we’ll be going over who we are and what our club does. We’ll also play some transportation trivia to get an early start on Traffic Bowl practice. As always, food and drink will be provided.
4/28 Meeting
This meeting will be our last meeting of the semester! We will go over our accomplishments as a club over the past year, and 2016-2017 officer elections will be held. The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm in 110 Sackett. Food will be provided, and we’ll head out to The Phyrst for drinks and pool afterward. It’s sure to be a blast; hope to see you there!
3/24 Meeting
We will be hosting another general meeting on Thursday, March 24 at 6:00 pm in 110 Sackett. Our guest speaker will be Hugh Mose, former general manager of CATA (the Centre Area Transportation Authority). He plans to talk about alternative fuels, land use planning, and emerging technologies in relation to transit. This will be a very informative talk for those interested in public transportation.

Our third meeting of the semester will take place today, March 3, 2016 at 6:00 pm in 110 Sackett.
We will have a guest speaker, Penn State Transportation Services Director Rob DeMayo, give a talk about his experience as the bus manager for the 2012 London Olympics. As always, food and drink will be provided!
