Introduction

The Permian Basin is the most active oil and gas production basin the U.S. with over 40% of drilling rigs located in this region of west Texas and southeast New Mexico. However, there has been almost no empirical methane emissions data collected in the Permian Basin. The primary goal of this project is quantifying methane emissions from the Permian Basin using tower-based measurements of methane concentrations.

In the above figure, dark blue symbols indicate oil and gas facilities in the Permian Basin and white symbols indicate tower measurement locations. Also shown are daytime mobile methane measurements observed on 6 – 10 August 2019.
