The Legacy of Kobe Bryant

For my last few posts, I have spent a lot of time dedicated to the conclusion of the football season. Now that the season has ended, I am going to move away from football and start to discuss some of winter’s top sports. However, first, I must note that I incorrectly predicted the result of the Super Bowl. The Patriots were able to pull off a big way in dramatic fashion by defeating the Seahawks 28-24.

In a game against the New Orleans Pelicans a few weeks ago, LA Lakers star Kobe Bryant suffered a torn rotator cuff and will miss the rest of the season. For more than a decade, Kobe has been regarded as one of the NBA’s top players, often in contention for the season scoring leader. However, given that Bryant has missed much of the last two seasons (last season due to knee and Achilles injuries) the question of Kobe’s future must be discussed. Since his most recent injury, Kobe has stated that the thought of retiring has crossed his mind. Kobe’s future has two potential options: he could call it quits after an illustrious career or attempt a comeback and face the possibility mediocre play. Given the hardships Kobe has faced over the past few years, the poor play of his LA Lakers, and the legacy that he has created during his career I believe that it would be in his best interest to call it quits and retire. Attempting a comeback and playing at a less than memorable caliber would diminish his illustrious career. However, if he were to retire now people of our generation would associate Kobe Bryant with greats such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and LeBron James.

Moving away from the NBA and into the world of college basketball, I want to investigate the possibility of the Kentucky Wildcats finishing the regular season with a perfect record. Currently, the Wildcats are 22-0 and have dominated their competition for much of the season. With 9 games remaining, Kentucky has the strong possibility of finishing the season a perfect 31-0. Two potential games that could cause problems for the Wildcats are away games at Tennessee and Florida. Both of these teams have had some big wins throughout the season and possess the talent to trip up Kentucky. However, given the fact that the Wildcats have one of the deepest and most talented teams in the nation, I believe that they will run the table and finish the season at 31-0.
