Picture Post top, as ordered from Univ. of New Hampshire

Picture Post top, as ordered from University of New Hampshire.

When we decided we wanted to join the Picture Post network, our first task was to get permission from the appropriate office on campus to install the posts.  We received permission to install four posts on campus, and we coordinated with the Director of  Business Services on campus as to where to place the posts.  She suggested locations on campus that would be seeing significant construction and development within the next 1-5 years.  Having the clearance to begin this project, we ordered five Picture Post tops from University of New Hampshire (four to set up on campus, one to use for demonstrations and as a visual aid).

Next, we connected with the head landscaper on campus, Mr. Charles Daly, to double-check the locations of where we wanted to place the Picture Posts, as we did not want the posts to interfere with the mowing or overall campus grounds maintenance.  We also asked for his assistance in digging the holes for the posts, and he kindly provided the lumber for the posts.

Once we had all of our materials for the Picture Post, we went to dig our first post. We had to be cautious of rocks, tree roots, and location of underground cables when digging. Mr. Daly dug a hole the ground deep and wide enough so we could leave 4 feet of lumber above the ground so that the post would be stable and a consistent height from location to location.

Then used a leveler to make certain that the post was horizontal and flat at the top.  We utilized a compass to make sure the north indicator on the post head was facing the correct direction. Because of our geographic location, we had to slightly rotate our Picture Post top 12 degrees west of magnetic north to face true north.

Next, we drilled the actual post head to secure the platform on the top and confirmed that the Picture Post platform was still level, and we had our very first picture post at Penn State Brandywine!

We went and installed three additional posts on campus, each in locations where there is expected to be future campus development in the short-term or long-term.
