Less than a week left in GRA and all the emotions are settling in. It is bittersweet having to leave this place so soon. It really feels as if I just arrived here, but at the same time I have been away from home for a long time and so much is happening there (my little sister just graduated from high school and is now PSU bound!!).

Being in Granada the past 7 weeks has been an incredible experience. Not only have I had a taste into the research world, spending my days in the CIMCYC with incredibly smart and motivated people, but the city of Granada has been really good to me as well. As I start to say my goodbyes, one of the hardest that comes to my mind is the little store/cafe/tapas bar where I spent a lot of my free time (I was there so much I almost considered asking for a job jajaja).

This tienda pequena is called Al Sur de Granada, and it is the first store you see as you enter through the arch of Elvira. I should also mention it is only a 2 minute walk from the Airbnb.

My appreciation for this little place starts with the fact that the food is my favorite in all of Granada, prepared using ingredients straight from the shelves that line the walls, and the fresh produce brought in each morning by local vendors. Lucy, one of the chefs, prepares the most incredible toastadas for breakfast, and tapas later on in the day.

My love for this place extends beyond the food though. Every time I enter through the doors, I hear Lucy say “hola Maggie Rose” or David ask how my day is going, offering one of the specialty vinos from the hills of Granada. The people that work at Al Sur create an intimate environment through their kindness, appreciation for good food, and caring personalities. It is sad to say goodbye to this place, and the people that have come to mean so much to me these past 7 weeks. I know I will be back to Granada in the future, and this will be one of the first places I visit 🙂

Had to get a shot with Lucy

As the work in the lab winds down, I realize that will be another hard goodbye for me. It has been a pleasure working alongside the people of laboratorios 12 y 19 en el CIMCYC. I have learned so much from these people who have made my PIRE experience one to remember. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to do research here.
