TOPIC:  “CRISPR Technologies” | Guest Speaker:  Dr. James Broach

(Hosted by postdoc Tessa Caceres)

October 18th, 2017 | 12:00 – 1:00 PM | Room C5702

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats or CRISPR/Cas9, as it is known more commonly in the scientific community, is a new genome editing system that can be used to engineer permanent changes to an organism’s or cell’s genetics. CRISPR/Cas9 was discovered in 1987 in Japan as natural process which forms a fundamental part of bacterial immunity.  Since its discovery, many biomedical research questions are now being investigated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. With certain ethical considerations, CRISPR/Cas9 is also being applied to modify the human germline. On Wednesday’s PLAN meeting, Dr. James Broach will give us some insights into applications of CRISPR/Cas9 in research as well as discuss future directions of this exciting, but controversial technology.  Bring your questions about CRISPR and come have an informative and interactive lunch with other postdocs!  Please see the attached flyer for more information.
