Job Shadowing Program Guidelines and Responsibilities
Thank you for your interest in participating in the job shadowing program! The goal of this program is to provide opportunities for current Penn State Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering students to gain a real life perspective of potential career opportunities by spending a day on-site with organizations that employ Industrial Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers. Please review the following guidelines, and then you can proceed to register for the program. We are currently accepting registration for Fall 2018, Spring 2019 and Summer 2019.
Eligible Participants
- Students currently enrolled in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State
- Organizations in and around the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania willing to allow current students to spend time on site learning about a particular job
Job Shadow Timing
- Spring Break
- Summer Break
- Holiday/Winter Break
- During School Semester (with approval from your professors)
Job Shadow Program Benefits
- Students
- Gain real life experience outside of the classroom
- Determine the skills you will need to be successful in the workplace
- Connect information learned in the curriculum to real life problems
- Provide network opportunities that could lead to potential co-op/internship opportunity
- Evaluate the culture of a company you may be interested in working for after graduation
- Determine if industrial and manufacturing engineering is really the correct career path

- Assist in the education of the next generation of industrial and manufacturing engineers
- Expose students to the application of what they learned in the classroom
- Provide network opportunities with future industrial and manufacturing engineers
Eligibility Requirements
- Students
- Currently registered in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State
- Willing to:
- Spend a day during the spring or summer break on-site during normal business hours at an employer
- Sign a waiver drafted by the Penn State legal department holding the Penn State harmless should you be injured transporting to or from the work site or during the time on-site
- Commit to attending the job shadow event on the date and time scheduled
- Complete a Job Shadow Program feedback form upon completion of the program Sponsors
- Sponsors
- Actively employ alumni from Penn State’s Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering program
- Consistently perform industrial or manufacturing engineering functions on a daily basis
- Willing to:
- Host a student for a full day during normal business hours during Penn State’s spring or summer break
- Complete a Job Shadow Program feedback form upon completion of the program
How to Participate
- Students

- Arrange the specifics of the visit with the assigned student
PSIMES Board Responsibilities
- Overall Job Shadow Program administration
- Liaison with various University departments involved with the Job Shadow Program and companies participating in the program
- Student/Sponsor job shadow matching
- Program improvement based on feedback form students and sponsors
