Showcase 2: Ethics in the Workplace
LER 460 UP HR Ethics
Dr. Tom Hogan

LER 460 is a hybrid/blended class (i.e., face-to-face and online) designed for seniors who wish to explore the concept of Ethical Leadership in the fields of human resource management, labor and employment relations. A key operating assumption of this course is that every employee of an organization has a responsibility to demonstrate ethical leadership. Three interrelated and mutually reinforcing subject areas are explored throughout the course at the individual, organizational and transnational levels – ethics, social responsibility and sustainability. Students develop their abilities to articulate their own moral values and to recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas. Students learn to recognize, evaluate, compare, contrast, combine and apply different approaches to reconciling ethical dilemmas in the workplace.

To encourage and promote Student Engagement, students are responsible for undertaking and completing a community service project in conjunction with the Penn State Sustainability Institute, Sustainable Community Collaborate Program and a campus/community partner. The project, using the Engagement Tool, will allow students to apply and demonstrate what they are learning in the course and from the curriculum relative to addressing a real world business challenge. Students are partnering with the following campus and community partners: Penn State Sustainability Institute; Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State; WPSU; Central PA Arts Festival and ClearWater Conservancy.
