We all dream of that perfect internship, but too often our reality consists of boring tasks, including grabbing coffee, taking phone calls, sending emails, and putting together whatever someone else doesn’t want to do.
Yeah … that doesn’t happen here at my NBC4 internship through the Penn State Washington Program.
Instead, I’ve had endless opportunities to try whatever it is I’m interested in. An internship at NBC4 is truly about your learning experience in addition to helping your colleagues. The city and surrounding areas are your office, where you’re able to gain hands-on experience and constantly learn about what’s going on around you.
News interns are given a flexible schedule to follow each week that’s specific to their career goals. Assignments include reporting/anchoring, production/assignment desk, writing, and special projects. As I go into my third week, I’ve already been able to do stand-ups, write my own scripts and edit them into packages. In addition, I write articles for the web, work at the assignment desk, sit in on live newscasts and shows, and accompany crews on breaking news.
Back in the newsroom, there’s no limit to the type of work you can do, whether it’s producing content for social media, shadowing producers and production assistants, or writing teases for the anchors. NBC4 wants its interns to become a part of the company and take full advantage of everything its building has to offer, including NBC Network News. By the end of the summer, interns will have produced their own newscast. Essentially, the more responsibilities you take on and complete successfully, the more you’re given.
A lot of NBC4’s employees have told me to “hit the ground running,” and so far, diving right in has led me to some of the most valuable learning experiences I’ve ever had.
