Do You Like Shoes?

By a show of hands, how many of you like shoes? Well, have you ever wondered what to do with the shoeboxes that your shoes come in?

  • SHOE BOX/OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD EXPLANATION:
    • What goes in them?
    • What is it?
    • Where do they go? (New Orleans for Katrina, Peru, Africa)
    • Who/what are they for?
    • SAMARITAN’S PURSE

So….why do this??

  • PROS:
    • Volunteer work that benefits orphaned and needy children within the U.S. AND worldwide

Why is this so important to me??

  • EXPLAIN CONNECTION TO PROJECT:
    • Gram (Area Coordinator)
    • Volunteer since 2009
    • Mission trip to North Carolina Processing Center

Amazing how one project connects so many people!

  • Talking about it initiates at least one response from someone

Not only does this project connect Christian communities throughout the nation, but it also connects to this very classroom.

  • Civic engagement definition (to me)
    • Give back to the worldwide community
    • RHETORICAL INTERACTION:
      • Voicing your beliefs and opinions through work and distribution of boxes
      • Purpose is to help others and spread gospel word
      • Each shoe box symbolizes rhetoric
    • Nonviolent approach to spread Christianity in other countries and help children
    • UNDERLYING IDEOLOGIES:
      • Christianity: whole message of organization
    • You are voicing ideologies: NOT underlying in this situation

Operation Christmas Child does require a little bit of your time, efforts, and money, but how can you compare such small contributions to the happiness of a child that lives in absolute poverty? What are you going to do with your old shoe boxes anyway?

I love this!! I can relate because my high school did Operation Christmas Child every year and I had so much fun doing it. And it’s super positive and you could potentially get the whole class involved! I’m just confused about like are you planning on having someone respond during your speech?

I was trying to add little things that would get the class involved a little bit! This is just a rough outline and I’m going to have to change some things around, but it was just a start so that I didn’t forget to involve everyone!

Operation Christmas Child seems like a great program and definitely is an oppurtunity to civic engagement. It seems like you have a personal connection which is really cool and will probably reflect in your speech. I just don’t understand what the artifact in this case is? My understanding of the project was that you needed a poster/flyer/perhaps even web advertisement to base the presentation off of. I think the focus probably needs to be shifted towards persuading the audience of how this artifact provides an oppurtunity for civic engagement. I’m not sure that my perception of the project is right, however.

I have a poster that goes along with the project! I just didn’t state this in my outline! I definitely need to reorganize, but like I said above, I tried to make a rough draft of where to start! I’m definitely going to have to refocus on the poster a little bit more! I was a little confused about the assignment myself, but I think that I understand it now that I’ve had the chance to look at other outlines and hear a bit more explanation in class. Hopefully after reorganization, it will make sense!

I think this is a really great topic because you have a personal connection with Operation Christmas Child. But, do you have an artifact? Or are you planning on interviewing someone? I would recommend making this clearer in your outline.

Ditto all of the previous comments in terms of re-focusing energy toward the actual poster and how it makes its arguments on the page. Remember, your goal is not to try to encourage us to participate (at least during the speech–afterward, it sounds like you might get a lot of interest from classmates!), but rather, to try to demonstrate how the poster makes rhetorical appeals that attempt to engage an audience. Based on the poster and where you found it, what type of people are most likely drawn to this engagement opportunity?
